Standards for the BACHELORS DEGREE THESIS elaboration of Victor Babes

University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Timisoara (UMFVBT)
Art. 1 General information
The Bachelors degree thesis represents an important component of the graduates scientific
knowledge and activity evaluation.
The Bachelors degree thesis tests the abilities to draw up and perform an independent research,
as well as to draw up and present the research results according to the rules of the scientific
community.
Art. 2 Topics and coordinators
The major criterion in the choice for a field or another, the topic source, has to constitute the
advantage that its exploitation might offer during the training process of the future expert. The
analysed, researched topic has to be correlated with the graduates university specialization,
especially with the activity segment in which he/she has thorough general and specialty
knowledge, but also a special interest.
The personnel of the faculty, starting from the university assistant up to the university professor
or/and the personnel or the researchers from other universities or institutions, having agreements
with the University in this matter, may be scientific coordinators.
The personnel has the obligation to accept to coordinate Bachelors degree theses. A scientific
coordinator can coordinate at the most 3 Bachelors degree theses per year.
The student and the scientific coordinator should communicate freely, scientifically, based on
mutual respect and appreciation.
The Bachelors degree thesis topics are set forth by each department and are published at the
beginning of each academic year at the department office. The students can propose topics for
the Bachelors degree theses.
The students are bound to choose the Bachelors degree thesis and to communicate its title and
plan, as well as the endorsement of the scientific coordinator, at the Faculty Deans Office, at the
latest on 30 October of the 5th academic year.
The thesis topic can be changed one time by the student and/or by the coordinator, after the
notification and the endorsement of the initial scientific coordinator, having also the approval of
the Faculty Deans Office.
The modification of the title and the scientific coordinator is no longer possible starting with the
second semester of the last academic year.

Art. 3 The Bachelors degree thesis structure

The Bachelors degree thesis has to be structured as follows:
1. the cover
2. the title page
3. the contents
4. the list of abbreviations and symbols
5. the actual thesis
a) introduction
b) content
c) conclusions and personal contributions
d) references
e) appendixes (optional)
The cover of the Bachelors degree thesis. The thesis cover has to comprise the following
information: the logo and the denomination of the higher education institution, respectively
Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Timisoara, the Faculty, the Department
and the Topic, the author of the thesis, the scientific coordinator, the year of Bachelors degree

The actual Bachelors degree thesis
a. Introduction

(1) The introduction of the Bachelors degree thesis is numbered with Roman numbers and is
designed to localize the research within a time, historical, geographical, professional context and
covers 1 or 2 pages.
(2) The introduction should comprise:
a) the justification for the research topic choice
b) the importance and the relevance of the topic
c) the brief presentation of the thesis content
d) the classification of the topic within the international, national and local concerns
e) the scientific objectives to be solved within the scientific research
f) synthetic comments on the approached research method and the research methodology
b. The content
The thesis content has to be divided into two elements: the theoretical or conceptual component
and the practical/applicatory component (contains one or several applications answering to the
thesis objectives). While the theoretical component proves the authors degree of information,
the practical component needs the identification/the elaboration of solutions, applicable to the
problems aimed in the thesis.
The thesis content has to be balanced between the two components, emphasizing the applicatory
part, therefore it should prove the ability of the graduate to creatively apply his/her theoretical
knowledge. It is recommended that the theoretical part should cover at the most 30-35% of the
thesis, while the practical part should cover approximately 65-70%.
The thesis content is numbered with Arabian numbers and has to be structured into three large
parts:
a) the general part
b) the special part
c) the conclusions
(a1) The general part aims at the current status of the researched topic the descriptive analysis
of the field achievements, based on a basic documentation.
(b1) The special part comprises the candidates contributions, filling the largest part of the
Bachelors degree thesis, and shows the type of research topic approach, respectively the
exploratory research or the applicatory research. The special part of the thesis may be achieved
under the form of a primary study (original observational, experimental or interventional
research) or a secondary study (the summary of the primary studies as a systematic analysis). It
comprises an experimental part and a part dedicated to the research results. The experimental
part presents the material studied, as well as the methods/the research techniques used, according
to the nature of the thesis and of the researches performed. The part dedicated to the research
results may comprise one or several chapters according to the selected method for experimental
verification, descriptively presenting, as the case may be, in tables, graphics, figures, as well as

debates, the methods used in comparison with the ones nationally and internationally used in the
field.
c. The conclusions and the personal contributions
The conclusions of the Bachelors degree thesis and the personal contributions have to
emphasise:
a) the measure in which the scientific research objectives have been achieved
b) the directions to continue the research
c) the personal contributions.
This part of the thesis represents a different chapter and shall cover 1-2 pages.
The conclusions part shall only present the answers to the problems and the hypotheses proposed
for research.
This part should be elaborated in a concrete and concise manner.
d. The references
The references comprise the list of all the sources of information, directly consulted and used by
the graduate to draw up the Bachelors degree thesis.
The references have to be selected and drawn up in the necessary number for the documentation
of the thesis, without reaching to an exhaustive list of references. (1) The references list drawn
up according to the Vancouver style, has to be inserted within the text and has to comprise at
least 30 titles and at the most 50 representative papers, such as books, articles published in
special journals, Doctoral theses, university courses, drawn up in the last 10 years, edited as
hardcopy or electronically, including webpages.
A references index may be quoted several times in a thesis.
The references index is inserted in the text, immediately after the presentation of the information
and before the full stop.
The references titles shall be numbered and shown in the order of the first reference within the
text.
The editing recommendations of the references have to comply with the Vancouver model.
http://www.library.uq.edu.au/training/citation/vancouv.pdf.

mentioned after the first six authors.

Indexed for MEDLINE www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals.
In the case of books, the chapter with the associated pages should be mentioned.
Examples:
Magazine articles: Fried LP, Kronmal RA, Newman AB, et al. Risk factors for 5-year mortality
in older adults: the Cardiovascular Health Study. JAMA, 1998;279:585-592
