A Triple Active Bridge DC-DC Converter

Capable of Achieving Full-Range ZVS
Introduction:
In recent years, global concerns regarding future fossil fuel
shortages have spurred efforts to reduce the reliance on oil, coal, and gas
to generate electricity. Consequently, electricity is increasingly
generated from solar, wind, or tidal energy sources. These sources are
renewable in nature, but highly variable, leading to the possibility of
significant dynamic mismatches between electricity supply and demand
levels. However, it has been proposed that the degree of mismatching
can be reduced through integrating the batteries of electric vehicles
(EVs), which are not being used at any given time, into national electric
grid. This would provide a means for dynamic grid stabilization, but
requires a bidirectional power interface between the grid and EVs to
allow vehicle-to-grid (V2G) energy transfers to take place. Among the
many types of bidirectional dcdc converters that could be used in a
V2G system, the DAB converter is a preferred option. In addition, it has
the ability to accommodate a wide range of voltage levels, as it may be
controlled to operate in buck or boost modes.

Existing system:
The dual active bridge (DAB) converter in Fig has been given
considerable interest in recent years for its favourable characteristics,
including zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of all devices, near-minimum
voltage and current stresses, and integrated transformer turns ratio.

Drawbacks:
The currents flowing in dc buses contain high ripple content;
therefore appropriate filtering circuits are necessary.
Proper control is required to prevent dc saturation on both sides as
there is no inherent dc current blocking capability for transformer
windings.
Similar to many other topologies, the converter may lose soft
switching in light load conditions.
Another disadvantage is relatively high component count that leads
to larger driver size, higher gate losses and increased cost
compared to low switch count topologies.

Proposed system:
The topology is capable of achieving ZVS across the full load
range with wide input voltage while minimizing heavy load conduction
losses to increase overall efficiency. This topology comprises three full
bridges coupled by a three-winding transformer. At light load, by
adjusting the phase shift between two input bridges, all switching

devices can maintain ZVS due to a controlled circulating current. At

heavy load, the two input bridges work in parallel to reduce conduction
loss.

Advantages:
ZVS operation is maintained at light load without penalty on
conduction loss at heavy load, while maintaining the same total
semiconductor area.

Applications:
Data center.
Electric vehicles.
Power electronics interfaces for future power systems based on
smart-grid technologies.
