Scandalous Wealth amid

Poverty
THE biggest budget so far for TV and radio ad for one
senatorial candidate was reported to be in the
neighborhood of One hundred Fifty Million Pesos. But
other sources reveal that funds for mobilization and vote
buying were definitely heftier than those of the ads. In a
country of corrupt politicians, nobody, of course, will
admit that a budget of Three Hundred to Four Hundred
Million Pesos could easily be a benchmark of the
campaign chest.
But how in the world can a senatorial candidate, or their
lackeys, spend this much? Of course, no one in his sane
mind would believe the cliché that these were
contributions from faithful friends—unless these friends
are jueteng and drug lords which is not improbable.
And how in the world can a candidate let loose a gigantic
campaign fund in a constituency marked with bad roads,
poor delivery of basic services and extreme poverty?
That is a painful parody. It surely needs a strange
character, or a hardened one maybe, for one to be
scandalously campaigning in wealth and luxury in the
midst of gaping poverty.
It is also fitting and proper for the Anti-Money Laundering
Council to immediately require commercial banks to
report interestingly huge withdrawals during the last
banking day before the May 14 elections. The Council
will do the entire Filipino people service by disclosing
their findings at the soonest possible time.
The Presidential Anti-Graft Commission should also
check on the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth
of these personalities. Who knows they may immediately
get their biggest fish ever.
But granting that these mammoth funds came from the
sweat of their brow, what is the sense of spending
hundreds of millions when the legal returns will only be
a monthly salary of forty or so thousand? But then,
without telling, the illegal returns maybe more.
Abp. Angel N. Lagdameo, DD Restating the Church’s
