REFERENCE
Today's youth face many risks, including drug abuse, violence and
HIV / AIDS. Responding to these risks before they become
problems can be difficult. One of the goals of the National
Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is to help the public understand
the causes of drug abuse and to prevent its onset. Drug abuse
has

serious

consequences

in

our

homes,

schools

and

communities. From the perspective of NIDA, the use of any illicit

drug or misuse of licit drugs is considered drug abuse.
Prevention science has progressed a lot in recent years. Many
interventions are being tested in real-life environments so that
they can more easily adapt to community use. Scientists are
5

studying a wider range of people and issues. For example, they

have identified effective interventions with younger populations
to help prevent risk behaviors before drug abuse occurs.
Researchers are also studying older teens who are already using
drugs to find ways to prevent further abuse or addiction. Also
they are studying practical issues such as cost analysis in relation
to the benefits. The presentation of these findings to the public is
one of the most important responsibilities of NIDA

PLATEAMIENTO OR DEVELOPMENT
Research over the past two decades have tried to determine how it starts
and how drug abuse progresses. There are many factors that can increase
a person's risk for drug abuse. Los factores risk may increase the chances
that a person will abuse drugs while protective factors can reduce this risk.
It is important to note, however, that most people who have a risk for drug
abuse do not start to use or become addicted. Moreover, what constitutes a
risk factor for one person may not be right for another.
Risk factors and protection can affect children at different stages of their
lives. At each stage, risks that can be changed through a preventive
6

intervention occur. You can change or prevent the risk of the preschool
years, such as aggressive behavior, with family, school, and community
interventions aimed at helping children to develop appropriate positive
behaviors. If they are not treated, negative behaviors can lead to additional
features such as academic failure and social difficulties, which increase the
risk of children for drug abuse in the future risks.

WHAT CAN WE DO
Prevention programs based on research focus on early intervention in child
development to strengthen protective factors before behavioral problems
develop.
The table below describes how risk factors and protective affect people in
five domains , or environments where interventions can be made .
Domain Risk Factors Protective Factors
Early aggressive behavior Individual Self-control
Lack of parental supervision Parents Family Monitoring
Fellow substance abuse Academic Aptitude
Availability of drugs anti- drug policies7School

Poverty Community Strong attachment to the neighborhood

Risk factors can influence drug abuse in several ways. The more are the
risks to which a child is exposed , the greater the likelihood that the child
will abuse drugs . Some of the risk factors may be more powerful than
others during certain stages of development, such as peer pressure during
the teenage years ; like some protective factors such as a strong bond
between parents and children , may have a greater impact on reducing
risks during the early years of childhood. An important goal of prevention is
to change the balance between risk factors and protection so that
protective factors exceed the risk .
What are the early signs of risk that may predict drug abuse in the future?
Some signs of risk can be seen as early as infancy or early childhood, such
as aggressive behavior, lack of self-control, or a difficult temperament.
When the child grows, interactions with family, school and community can
affect your risk for drug abuse in the future.
The first children's interactions occur in the family. Sometimes the family
situation increases the child's risk for drug abuse in the future, for example
when there is:
lack of affection and support from parents or caregivers;
inefficient parenting; Y
a caregiver who abuses drugs.
But families can provide protection against future drug abuse when there is:
a strong bond between children and parents;
8

parental involvement in a child's life; Y

clear limits and consistent enforcement of discipline.
Interaction outside the family may involve risks for both children and
adolescents, such as:
negative behavior at school or poor social behavior;
academic failure; Y
the association with peers who abuse drugs.
The association with peers who abuse drugs often is the most immediate
for teens are exposed to drug abuse and delinquent behavior risk.
Other factors such as the availability of drugs, drug trafficking patterns, and
beliefs that drug abuse is generally tolerated-are risks that can influence
young people to start abusing drugs

CONCLUSION
Anyone can become addicted to drugs
Thanks to scientific advances , we know more than ever about how drugs
work in the brain. We also know that drug addiction can be successfully
treated to help people stop abusing drugs and lead a productive life. If you
think you or a loved one may be addicted to drugs, seek the advice of a
doctor or specialist drug addiction.
