Getting a full-time job at 16 in Britain

In Britain you can leave school at sixteen and get a job, but you cant work full
time until the last Friday in June even if you have turned sixteen before this.
There are also limitations on where you can work because of your age. For
example, you wont be able to take a job which involves driving, because you
are not legally allowed to drive until you are seventeen.
When thinking about getting a job when you leave school, you need to think
about the future, not just the present. How about learning while you work? Try
to find a job which offers training even if it pays less! Getting a job with training
that leads to a qualification will help you progress in your work and when the
time comes to move you will have relevant experience and qualifications.
When you apply for a job, make sure you ask what training or opportunities are
available. You will need to find out whether it is in-house (run by the
company you are working for) or external (through a training provider, perhaps
a college).
If you are sixteen or seventeen and you do decide to take a job that isnt
offering you training that leads to a qualification, you may be entitled to time
off for study or training during normal working hours. If you decide you are
going to look for a job at sixteen when you finish Year 11, you will be entitled to
receive the national minimum wage.
