MEAN DEFINATION: The mean is the average of the

numbers: a calculated "central" value of a set of
numbers.
METHODS OF CALCULATING MEAN:
Direct mean method
Assumed mean method

Step-Deviation method

Example:
The following frequency distribution showing the marks
obtained by students in statistics at a certain college.
Find the arithmetic mean using (1) Direct Method (2)
Short-Cut Method (3) Step-Deviation.

MODE DEFINATION: The number which appears most

often in a set of numbers.

L i is the lower limit of the modal class .

f i is the absolute frequency of the modal
class.
f i--1 is the absolute frequency immediately
below the modal class.
f i-+1 is the absolute frequency immediately
after the modal class.
a i is the width of the class containing the
modal class.

Example:
Calculate the mode of a statistical distribution
given by the following table:

Median definition: The middle value in a set of

numbers arranged in increasing order. If there is an
even number of values, then median is the average of
the middle two values.

Median = L + I *(N/2 - F)/f

L = lower limit of the interval containing the median
I = width of the interval containing the median
N = total number of respondents
F = cumulative frequency corresponding to the lower
limit
f = number of cases in the interval containing the
median
EXAMPLE:
The distribution below gives the weights of 30 students
of a class. Find the median weight of the students.

50 55

5 + 8 = 13
