Responding (essay response with reference to a studied text)


Remember to break the question down, to consciously decide how best to structure your
essay, and to plan before you begin writing. Also remember that you must discuss
techniques and conventions in a responding question (discuss the mise en scene as
opposed to individual techniques if your reference text is multimodal).
1. Explain how a text uses generic conventions to convey ideas about topics, events or
people.
2. Discuss how the structural features and language conventions used by an author
have shaped your understanding of an issue or event.
3. How has at least one text you have studied positioned you to respond to the
representation of either people or settings?
4. With reference to a written text you have studied, explain how you have been
positioned to respond to an idea or issue.
5. Discuss the factors that influenced your response to the group/s represented in two
texts you have studied (change to one if doing short answer).
6. Explain how a text represents particular ideas about the world.
