Career in Medicine
About the NEET
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is the major examination for admission in MBBS (Medicine) and BDS
(Dental) courses in both government and private medical colleges in India. The test will be conducted by the Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE). NEET-UG replaced the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT). However, AIIMS - New Delhi, PGIMER
- Chandigarh and JIPMER will continue to conduct their separate entrance examinations for admission in their MBBS and BDS
courses. Around 7.5 lakh students registered for NEET 2016 in both the phases put together.

Format of the NEET

NEET 2016 consisted of 1 multiple choice question (MCQ) paper. There were four answer choices, of which only one is the best
choice. Total duration of the test was 3 hours. Each Question was of four marks. Each wrong answer resulted in deduction of
1 mark The break-up of the question paper is given below.

Alternate Career Options Abroad

In India, for Medical Stream students, the first choice is the study of Medicine. The alternate choices include study of Biology/
Botany/Zoology and related programs. However, these alternates do not have a great link with employability in industry or in
academics.

Law Entrance Examinations
There are four main law entrance examinations that are popular across the India.
1.

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) - This is the entrance test for admission in 17 of the top National Law Universities
in India. In 2016, almost 45,000 students registered for this examination.

2.

All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) - This test is for admission in National Law University, Delhi.

3.

Symbiosis Entrance Test - Law (SET - Law) - Symbiosis runs law schools in two cities - Pune and NOIDA in Delhi-NCR.
These law schools have a common entrance test called SET - Law.

4.

LSAT (India) - This test is designed by LSAC, USA and is not to be confused with the LSAT. This test is required for
admission in Jindal Global Law School and few other law colleges in India.

Common Pattern of Law Entrance Exams in India

Although there are variations in the test pattern and duration of different law entrance exams in India, there are certain common
sections, which are discussed below.
English (including Comprehension): This section tests your understanding of English and critical thinking. Questions will
assess your comprehension of passage content, theme and word meanings. Other question types includes para jumbles, para
completion, sentence error identification, vocabulary, etc.
General Knowledge & Current Affairs: This section will test the knowledge of current affairs and general awareness including
Static GK, especially an understanding of the Constitution of India.
Mathematics (Numerical Ability): The standard of this section is much easier than that of the IITJEE. It tests you for basic
mathematical ability and questions are usually based on your Class 8th to 10th syllabus. Typical question types include
percentages, ratios, interest, profits and losses, time and work, etc.
Logical Reasoning: This section assesses your ability to think logically and coherently. You will be required to identify patterns,
logical links and rectify illogical arguments. This section covers a variety of logical aptitude questions including relationships,
syllogism, logical sequences, analogies, etc.
Legal Aptitude: You do not require a prior knowledge of law. However, you need to understand the principles on which laws
are based. The questions are designed to test your aptitude for understanding links between legal principle and facts, logical
sequences, cause and effect, etc. The questions are usually based on principle- fact model. Some direct questions on Legal
General Knowledge may also be asked. Please note, LSAT - India does not have a section on Legal Aptitude.

Practicing Law in India

To practice law in India you need to be registered as an Advocate with the Bar Council of India (BCI). You should complete
your law degree from India or Abroad. If you have completed your law degree from India, you need to register yourself with the
appropriate State Bar Council. Thereafter, you need to pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) which is conducted by the BCI.
If you plan to complete your law degree from abroad, it is advised that you do so from a University recognised by the BCI. The
BCI has published a list of Foreign Universities recognised by it. This list includes 35 from the UK, 16 from the USA, 13 from
Australia and 3 from Canada, apart from 10 others. In order to practice in India such students will have to pass the Qualifying
Examination for the Indian Nationals holding Foreign Law Degrees.
