WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS

Woodwind instruments [also called woodwinds] are a family of musical instruments

within the more general category of wind instruments.
There are two types of woodwind instruments:
Flutes
Reed Instruments [otherwise called reed pipes]

EXAMPLES OF WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS

Flutes
Flutes produce sound by directing a focused stream of air across the edge of a hole in a
cylindrical tube.
The flute family can be divided into two sub-families: Open Flutes
Closed Flutes
To produce a sound with open flutes, the player is required to blow a stream of air across a
sharp edge that then splits the airstream.
To produce a sound with a closed flute, the player is required to blow air into a duct. Thus
duct acts as a channel bringing the air to a sharp edge.

EXAMPLES OF WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS

Oboe
The oboe is a family of double reed woodwind musical instruments. The most commonly
used type is the standard oboe. It plays in the treble or soprano range. It is made from a wooden
tube roughly 65cm (25 inches) long with metal keys, a conical bore and flared bell.
Sound is produced by blowing into the reed and vibrating a column of air. The distinctive
oboe tune is versatile and has been described as bright.
When the term oboe is used alone, it is generally taken to mean the standard treble
instruments.

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS

A percussion instrument is a musical instrument that is sounded by being struck or

scraped by a beater (including attached or enclosed beaters or rattles) struck, scraped or rubbed
by hand; or struck against another similar instrument.
The percussion family is believed to include the oldest musical instruments following the
human voice.

EXAMPLES OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS

Bass Drum
A bass drum is a large drum that produces a note of low definite or indefinite pitch. Bass
drums are percussion instruments and vary in size and are used in several musical genres.
Three major types of bass drums can be distinguished:1. The type usually seen or heard in orchestral ensemble or concert band music
is the orchestral or concert bass drum. It is the largest drum of the orchestra.
2. The kick drum, struck with a beater attached to a pedal usually seen on drum
kits.
3. The pitched bass drum, generally used in marching bands and drum corps.
This is tuned to a specific pitch and is usually played in a set of three to six
drums.

EXAMPLES OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS

Tambourine
The tambourine is a musical instrument in the percussion family consisting of a frame,
often of wood or plastic, with parts of small metal jingles called zils.
Classically, the term tambourine denotes an instrument with a drumhead, though some
variants may not have a head at all.
Tambourines are often used with regular percussion sets. They can be mounted but
position is largely down to preference.

BRASS WIND INSTRUMENTS

A brass wind instrument is a musical instrument that produces sound by sympathetic

vibration of air in a tubular resonator in sympathy with the vibration of the players lips.
Brass wind instruments are also called labrosones which means lip vibrated
instruments. There are several factors involved in producing different pitches on a brass
instrument. Slides, valves, crooks or keys are used to change vibratory length of tubing.

EXAMPLES OF BRASS WIND INSTRUMENTS

Trumpet
A trumpet is a musical instrument. It is the highest register in the brass family.
Trumpets are among the oldest musical instruments dating back to at least 1500 BC. They
are played by blowing air through closed lips producing a bussing sound that starts a standing
wave vibration in the air column inside the instrument.

EXAMPLES OF BRASS WIND INSTRUMENTS

Horn
The horn, also known as the Corno and French Horn, is a brass instrument made of
more than 20 feet of tubing wrapped into a coil with a flared bell.
A musician who plays the horn is called a horn player (or less frequently, a hornist). In
informal use, "horn" may also refer to nearly any wind instrument with a flared exit for the
sound.

STRING INSTRUMENTS

String instruments are musical instruments that produce sound from vibrating strings.
In most string instruments the vibrations are transmitted to the body of the instrument,
which also vibrates, along with the air inside it.

EXAMPLES OF STRING INSTRUMENTS

Violin
The violin family of musical instruments was developed in Italy in the 16th century. At the
time the name of this family was Violas de Braccio which was used to distinguish them from
the Viol Family [Violas da Gamba].
The standard modern violin family consists of the violin, viola, cello and double bass.
