A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science and Health 4

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the 60-minute period, the pupils are expected to:
a. demonstrate that the Earth takes one year/12 months/ 365 days to make a
complete revolution around the Sun (366 every fourth/leap year) following its
own orbit.
b. perform activities to verify how the Earth revolves around the sun; and
c. participate in all group works wisely and effectively.
II.
Subject Matter Earths Revolution
a. Unit: Earth
b. Content: How the Earth revolves around the Sun
c. Concept:
It takes one year/12 months/ 365 days for the Earth to make a complete
revolution around the sun (366 every 4 years) following its own orbit.
A leap year is a year that has one extra day in it. It occurs roughly every four
years and has 366 days.
d. Science Processes: observing, comparing

Pupils Activities

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Routines
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Health Inspection Report
2. Drill
Let us begin with a short exercise.
But before we start, why dont we sing
our Science Song? Let us sing
altogether.
Science Song
There is Science in everyday life, in everyday life
We observe, we describe, we record, we classify
There is Science in everyday life, in everyday life

Class, do you still remember the Earths

movements?

Yes, teacher!

Good! I put some half of paper hearts

under your chairs. I want you to find
your partner by looking for the other
half of that paper hearts and connecting
the words and their meaning.
(The teacher will post the words:
rotation, revolution, axis, orbit)
1. R_TA_T_ ON
2. RE_O_UT_ON
3. A_IS
4. O_B_T
For the first word, it is the movement of
the earth on its own axis. What is it?

It is rotation, teacher.

Thats correct! How about this one, it is

the movement of the earth around the
sun in its orbit. What is it?

Teacher that is revolution.

Correct! Lets try the third word. It is an

imaginary line where the earth rotates in
one day. What is it?
It is axis, teacher.
Alright! And for the last word, it is the
path that the earth follows around the
sun. What is it?

Teacher that is orbit.

Excellent! All of you have answered it

correctly. Give yourselves a WOW clap.
1-2-3 (clapping)
1-2-3 (stomping feet)
WOW!
3. Review
What was our lesson yesterday?
Teacher, our lesson yesterday was about the
Earths tilted axis.
Correct! Does that have any effect
on the Earths seasons?
Now, I want you to connect these
pictures to its season.
(The teacher will post a board with
maze)

Yes, it does have teacher. The tilted axis of the

earth causes the four different season on the
earth.
(Selected pupils will go to the board)

Very good, class! You have matched

those pictures to its season.
4. Checking of Assignment
Will you please read your
assignment?
Im glad that most of you did their
assignment and for those who
didnt, I hope you to do your
assignment.
B. Developmental Activity
1. Motivation
Class, I will let you watch a video
clip. But first, I want to see that you
are behaved. Observe and listen
carefully.
(After watching the video clip)
What do you notice about the
movement of the Earth?
It rotates while it revolves around the sun.
Thats right. How many days does it
take for the Earth to complete its
one revolution?
It takes 365 days for the Earth to complete its

one revolution.
2. Presentation
(The teacher will show a picture of
the sun)
What can you say about this
picture?
Good!
(The teacher will show a picture of
the Earth)
How about this picture?

That is the sun, teacher. It gives heat, light and

energy.

That is the Earth, teacher. That is the place

where we live.
(The teacher calls a pupil to answer. Then, the
pupil calls another one to answer.)
Alright. Now, who among you has a
calendar at home? How about the
others?

(The pupils will raise their right hand)

(The teacher will show a calendar)

I have here a calendar. How many
months do we have in one year?
How many weeks? How many
days?
Who will guess?
We will discuss that later on.
3. Activity
The class is divided into 4 groups.
But, before we proceed with our
next activity, let us do a jazz chant
for our standards in doing our
activity.
Activity Song
Lets do our activity
Wisely and harmoniously
Work with the group
Observe properly
Lets do our activity

What do we need to remember in

doing our activity?
Very good. Keep that in mind so
that you can do your group work

(The teacher calls a pupil to answer. Then, the

pupil calls another one to answer.)

properly.
Leaders, please get your materials
here.
Group 1- Rotation
Materials:
-1 sock with a string tied on it.
Instructions:
1. Imagine that the sock is the Earth.
2. Hold the end of the string (sock tied on
the other end).
3. Spin the string upward.
4. Observe how it rotates. Answer the
following questions:
*In what direction does the sock (Earth)
revolve? What was shape of its
revolution?
Group 2- Revolution
Materials:
-paper-mat with orbit (an orbit is drawn on the
paper-mat)
Instructions:
1. Place the paper-mat on the floor.
2. One pupil will stand on the center of the
paper-mat. Another pupil will walk along the
orbit.
3. Imagine that the pupil at the center is the
Sun and the other pupil walking along the orbit
is the Earth. Answer the following questions:
*What movement of the Earth is shown? In
what direction does it move in the orbit?
Group 3- Axis
Materials:
-cut-out arrows
-cut-out Earth pictures
-cut-out Sun picture
Instructions:
1. Think carefully on how the Earth is
arranged on the board.
2. Paste the arrows to show the direction of
the Earths movement around the Sun.
3. Take a deeper look on what you have
formed. Answer the following questions:
*How were the different pictures of the
Earth arranged? In what direction does it
move around the Sun?
Group 4- Orbit

-cartolina
-crayons
1. Draw the Sun on the center of the cartolina.
2. Draw an orbit around the Sun.
3. Draw the Earth on the orbit.
4. Make sure to draw it according to its proper
places. Answer the following questions:
*What is shown on your drawing? What
movements of the Earth can be seen on your
work?
After doing the activities
Leaders of each group kindly
present your work and observations
here in front.
Very good, IV-1! You all did a great
job.
Give yourselves a Fireworks Clap.

4. Discussion
Now we all know that the Earth
rotates while revolving around the
sun like for Group 2-Revolution,
youve seen how the Earth moves
on its axis and on its orbit around
the sun.
For Group 1-Rotation, they were
able to show that the Earth revolves
in an elliptical or oval shape
Very good! We have seen how the
Earth rotates on its axis while it
revolves around the sun.
(The teacher will flash the word
elliptical and its meaning on the
powerpoint presentation)
For Group 3-Axis, they now knew
that the Earth revolves in counterclockwise direction. Right?
And for the Group 4-Orbit, they

(Leader of each group will go in front and

present their work)
1-2-3 pshh (pointing right thumb to left)
1-2-3 pshh (pointing right thumb to right)
1-2-3 pshh (pointing right thumb down)
1-2-3 pshh (pointing right thumb up)
1-2-3 pshh-pshh-pshh-pshh (pointing right
thumb to all four directions
BOOM!

found out that the Earth rotates and

revolves both in counter-clockwise
direction.
When the Earth rotates it also
revolves. The rotation of the Earth
affects the seasons. Like in the
Philippines, we only have 2 seasons:
rainy day and sunny day. But in
other parts of the Earth. They have
summer, winter, spring and fall.
Let us see how that works. I need
two volunteers. One boy and one
girl.
On the paper-mat you will see the
elliptical orbit with four stations at
North, East, West and South
direction. Each station has a season.
I need 4 pupils to stay at each
station and feel each season.

(One pupil will wear the cardboard with Earth

image and hold the globe; the other pupil will
wear the cardboard with Sun and hold a
flashlight)

Mr. Sun, stay at the center of the

orbit and hold the flashlight. Make
sure to direct the light to the globe
as it revolves. Ms. Earth, rotate the
globe as you revolve around Mr.
Sun. Stop on each station.
Class, let us watch quietly as they
show us how the seasons change.
(After the pupils demonstration)
Now, class what have you observed
about the Earths movements and
the different seasons?
Very good! Lets give yourselves a
4-Seasons Clap?

So the Earth revolves around the

sun in 365 days. If we add up the
remaining day per year, we are
going to have one extra day after 4

Teacher, the seasons change as the Earth rotates

and revolves around the sun.
1-2-3 BRRR! (freezing)
1-2-3 HMMM (inhaling)
1-2-3 WHOOO! (sweating)
1-2-3 SHHK-SHHK (sweeping leaves)
1-2-3 Winter, spring, summer and fall!

years or what we call the leap year.

(The teacher will flash the word leap
year and its meaning)
(The teacher will show a calendar of
2012)
I have here another calendar.
(The teacher will turn both
calendars to February)
Can you see the difference between
them?
Thats right! During a leap year we
add that extra day in February. That
makes 366 days in a leap year. Last
year 2012, we have 29 days on
February because it was leap year.

The first calendar has only February 28 and the

second one has February 29, teacher.

C. Concluding Activities
1. Generalization
