2016 PYSRC Project

Progress Report

It has already been three years since the construction of the Pyongyang Spine
Rehabilitation Center began. Through many peoples efforts and support, construction
of the center, treatment of patients, and training of doctors have progressed for the past
three years. We present this report to you along with our deep gratitude and thanks for
journeying with us on this challenging and narrow road.
Construction of the PYSRC began in 2013, and currently as of April 2016, the outside
frame has been completed with primarily just the interior left to finish.
The Pyongyang Spine Rehabilitation Center is designed to provide non-surgical treatment
for neuromuscular conditions and pediatric developmental disabilities. Through this
center, not only will patients be treated but also doctors will be trained in these two new
medical specialties.
While waiting for the completion of the center, right now in a small 15m2 room
cerebral palsy and autistic patients are being treated as doctors are trained in pediatric
rehabilitation. Unfortunately, because of limited space and resources, we have had to
turn away or postpone the treatment of many patients. However, through all of our
hard work and sweat, we are seeing a glimpse of how this program is saving lives and
providing hope to children and their families as they dream for a new future.
Through beginning with just one cerebral palsy patient in 2012, we are seeing the
development of therapy and specialty training for cerebral palsy in the DPRK. Since
then, we have treated children beginning from the ages of 4 months who have come
from various provinces of the DPRK. It has been a privilege to treat each child as they
have sought out our small treatment room at the Pyongyang Medical School Hospital.
In addition, from 2015 we have begun treatment and training of doctors for children
with autism. The second set of lectures and training for autism was completed in April
of 2016. Plus, special education for children admitted to our hospital for long-term
treatment has also begun.
We are especially thankful as the doors have opened wide for our doctors in Pyongyang
to receive training for pediatric developmental disabilities as this brand-new medical
specialty develops. It may seem like a small accomplishment, but as seen in the book
of Nehemiah, every brick that is laid upon the wall contributes significantly to the
success of the project as a whole.
At times it appears that we are striving for the impossible in the midst of difficult
circumstances, but through it all we are profoundly grateful for your partnership,
encouragement, and for your willingness to journey together with us through it all.
Thank you! Sincerely,
Stephen and Joy Yoon
