Inthefirststanzaofthepoem,thepoetcompareshumanstoislands.Thissuggestshow
distantwearefromoneanother.Hepaintsanimageofavastseabetweentheislands
(people),andemphasisestheirseparationthroughtheline"Wemortalmillionslivealone."
Thefinalwordofthelineisputintoitalicstoemphasiseitandthelinestopsatthatpoint.It
conveysthesadnessoffeelingaloneinsociety.
Inthesecondstanzatheseislandsaredrawntooneanother,throughthelovelysoundsof
birdssinging,soundswhichdriftbetweentheislands.Thepoetexpresseshisdesirefor

wishesthatthewaterbetweentheislandswouldrecedesothatthelandformsmightmeet
again.Helongsforasenseoftogethernessbetweenpeople.
Inthefinalstanza,heaskswhatpowercouldpossiblykeeploversapartlikethis,and"render
vaintheirdeepdesire."Theanswer,hestates,isGodtheGodofthemodernworlddoes
notprovidethesamehopeandconnectionthatHeoncedid,sincemuchoffaithistaintedby
science.
