Evening Talk on Engineering Structural Dynamics Mechanical Scenario

st

Date
: Wednesday, 21 September 2016
Venue : IEM (Southern Branch) Training Centre, 24-B Jalan Abiad, Taman Tebrau Jaya, Johor Bahru.
Speaker : Ir. Dr. Roslan Abd Rahman
Synopsis
Problems involving vibrations occur in many areas of mechanical engineering such as in machineries. These
vibrations are undesirable because they produce increased stresses, increased bearing loads, and induced
fatigue. Structural dynamics is a discipline which covers the behaviour of structures subjected to dynamic loadings.
In mechanical engineering applications, the natural frequencies of vibrations and its corresponding mode shapes
are of interest. This can be achieved by conducting experimental and analytical model analysis whereby both input
forces and output responses need to be determined. These dynamic properties are important to avoid resonance
phenomena, whereby the frequency of excitation forces coincide with the natural frequencies of the structure,
causing very high amplitudes of vibrations. In certain cases, the vibration of machineries during their operations
are important to see how they behave under motion modes. This can be achieved by doing an Operational
Deflection Shape which is able to identify the locations of high vibrations. In some cases the actual input forces
cannot be measured. However, the dynamic properties can be determined by using Operational Model Analysis
where several output responses need to be measured without measuring the excitation forces. The author will
present these techniques and their applications in several case studies. This talk will present these techniques and
their applications in several case studies.

About the Speaker:

Ir. Dr. Roslan Abd Rahman graduated with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Sunderland Polytechnic (1980),
M.Sc. in Marine Engineering from Newcastle Upon Tyne University (1982) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering
from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (1996 ). He joined the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UTM in 1980 and has
over 35 years of working experience as an academic, and also 10 years in consulting works. He was appointed the
Head of Applied Mechanics and Design Department for 6 years since 1983, Deputy Dean (Academic) from 1998 to
2000, and Dean of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 2010 to 2014. He was promoted to Professor in year
2005. He has been teaching subjects such as Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Machines, Control, Mechanical
Vibrations and Structural Dynamics. He also wrote and produced a book on Mechanics of Machines and Vibrations.
His main area of interest is structural dynamics specializing in the area of model analysis. He has been involved in
lecturing and training of using model analysis software to several institutions and consulting works on vibrations
measurements and structural dynamics. His research involved looking into vibration issues and noise radiations in
the development of a 2-stroke gasoline engine, studying on the dynamics characteristics in the development of
truck chassis, development of magnetorheological damper for semi-active suspension and vibrational power flow
in fibre-reinforced composite materials.
