Reaction Paper
For the video entitled A Day in the Life Construction Project Management, it really
talks about the different engineering related works that comprise the day of a project manager
may it be on the office or on site. The goal of the video is to educate aspiring project managers
on what it takes to make it out there and how other factors of the project help or affect the
accomplishment of a project.
The video put some strong emphasis on the things that happen on the office. It recounts
on when project managers are on the office, they are set to answer phone calls and emails and
organize meetings for creation of new ideas and just about checking what is happening with
other plans and projects. The project manager is a part of a collaborative team where respecting
the members ideas and opinions is of prime consideration. There are also factors that might help
the project manager to ease out some of the work in the office like the Building Information
Modelling (BIM) which saves money, time and labor and also creates other job opportunities. It
is said that technology in itself is in line with engineering.
It also accents the different works that the project manager must do when he/ she is at the
job site. First one is meeting the superintendent and foreman of the project in order to address the
present problems and especially to look ahead some issues and problems that may arise. He is
also obligated to talk to other crews of the project in order to apply hands on solution. The same
as on the office, the project manager has to make sure that the owner is happy and everyone is
heard.
During the latter part of the video, it lists the different characteristics that the project
manager should have like having good grades, experience, good work ethic, being organized,
deep technical skills, having to work well with a team and of course, being a good
communicator. The project manager during the work gets to interact with different people and
after a days work he feels a sense of accomplishment every time.
As a suggestion for the video, maybe it should also involve some problems that a project
manager might encounter in a day like not agreeing on some things or addressing some
employee problems. The project manager should also be pragmatic and exercise authority on
some things so that he is constantly respected as their leader.
All throughout, there are many points of good interest that can be acquired from the
video. The most important message is get a good balance between physical, mental and social
skills in order to be a good construction project manager. A good body for the energy needed to
multitask and juggle between office and site works, an effective mind to apply the theories in
engineering and a personality that can be sympathetic and assertive.
