A) For rising spindle valve

Select gear box output coupling type A

Select Gear box model whose maximum permissible thrust is equal to or greater than
the required thrust
Ensure that the bore in coupling A is sufficient to accommodate the valve stem.

Considering above points, we select model S5 with A100- A base.

Selection of an Actuator

Find out the required input torque at gear box input end.
For model S5, the factor is 3.85 & the rated output ( for actuator coupling) is 750
NM.
Thus the input torque =

750
3.85
=
194.8 NM
Thus select an Actuator giving 200 NM output torque

Actuator speed in rpm

= 60 x No. of turns for full travel x Gear Box Ratio
Operating time in secs.
= 60x55x5.33
180
= 97.7 rpm
Choose the rearest available speed.

The coupling between the Gear Box & an electric actuator is always type E.

B) For Non rising stem valves

In this case, follow the above selection procedure, except following Select the Gear box for the rated output torque required for the valve
The output compling type will be generally E
Ensure that the maximum bore in the gear box matches with the valve stem dia
Note :- After the selection of the suitable gear operator, reconfirm the following
parameters1) The Gear Operator torque capacity matches with the valve- torque requirement.
(Also ensure that the gear operators output-torque for motor operation is more
than or at least equal to the required valve torque.)
2) The maximum stem acceptance in the gear operator matches with the valve stem
dia.
3) The mounting flange details are compatible with the valve requirement.

FOR QUARTER TURN VALVES.

( i.e. Butterfly valves, ball valves, plug valves, dampers etc.)
For these requirements, the movement of the valve stem is thru 900. the large
electrical actuators are multiturn type & therefore it is necessary to provide an intermediate
quarter turn gear operator in between the valve & the actuator to achieve 900 rotation of the
final control element.
Data to be supplied by customer :
1) Type & size of valve

2) Valve unseating (max.) torque, NM

3) Shaft dia. Of valve
4) Mounting flange details
5) Operatng time in secs.
6) Type of duty
Notes
1) For electrical actuator coupling, derate the gear operator rating (specified for Hand
operation) by 30% for ON/OFF duty.
2) For Regulating (modulating) duty service, the derating factor is around 45%
3) The running torque should not be more than 50% of the unseating (Max.) torque for
regulating duty service.
Example
Valve size & type
- Butterfly valve, 900 m/m
Valve shaft, m/m
- 80m/m
Max. unseating torque, NM - 7650
Step-1 : Selection for hand operation
From the data sheet select the gear operator whose rating is more than or equal to
7650 NM.
The model is WG 110/S giving 10000 NM, max. output for hand-operation. The
spindle dia. acceptance & mounting details as per the Data Sheet.
Step-2 : Selection for Elec. Act. Coupling for ON/OFF duty
a) The derated, max. torque required.
=
=

7650
0.7
10929 NM.

b) Thus from Data- Sheet, select, model WG75-S25, giving 12500 NM Max. torque.

Step-3 Selection for Elec. Act. Coupling for regulating duty

a) the derated, max. torque required.
=7650
0.55
= 13909 NM
b) From Data-sheet select,
Model WG-75-S40, giving 17500 NM Max. torque.

Step-4 Selection of Actuator

The input to the gear operator is the output from actuator.

The input to gear operator
= Max. output of the gear operator
Gear Box Factor
For WG-110/S,
Input torque = 7650
70

=109.28 NM.

For WG75-S25,
Input torque = 10929
48
=227.7 NM
For WG75-S40,
Input torque = 13909
77
=180.6 NM

In all cases, select Actuator having an output more than the required input torque

Speed of actuator
Assuming 45 secs (*) is the operating time ( open to close operation ) specified,

The Act. Speed required = Gear Box ratio x 60 _

4
45(*)
Select the Actuator with speed as required above.

SELECTION OF MANUAL OVERIDE (MOR) :-

The quarter turn, manual override (MOR) units are 900 movement, worm gear units.
These gear operators are used along with pneumatically- operated control valves &
can be clutched/declutched into the systemData required for selection
1) Valve size
2) Max. Operating torque for valve.
3) Max. Operating torque for the pneumatic actuator when compresoed air supply fails.
Selection
As the MOR units are put into service when the service lines ( elec. supply to solenoid
valves or compressed air to pneumatic actuators) fail, the selection of the MOR units is done
as followsMax. torque of MOR unit
= Max. torque of valve + torque required to overcome/ move the
actuator in failed condition
* After the selection of MOR unit for torque requirement, verify the following Mounting details at valve & actuator ends.
Coupling compatibility at valve stem & the actuator-end.
