Introduction:
Sexual violence against children is a gross violation of childrens rights. Yet it is a global reality across all
countries and social groups. It can take the form of sexual abuse, harassment, rape or sexual
exploitation in prostitution or pornography. It can happen at homes, institutions, schools, workplaces,
and more unimaginable places.
The 2014 UNICEF study, estimates that around 120 million girls under the age of 20 (about 1 in 10) have
been subjected to forced sexual intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point of their lives. Boys
also report experiences of sexual violence, but less than girls. While more recent global estimates on
sexual violence among boys are unavailable due to the lack of comparable data in most countries, girls
typically report lifetime rates three times higher than boys in High Income Countries. Millions of more
children are likely exploited in prostitution or pornography each year around the world, most of the
times lured or forced into these situations through false promises and limited knowledge about the
risks.
Child abuse in Latin America:
Information gathered from various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean shows that between 70
and 80 per cent of sexual abuse victims are girls 50 per cent of the cases, the perpetrators live under the
same roof as the victims and that 75 per cent of the perpetrators are close relatives of the victims. As a
fact many mothers know that their husbands are abusing their children, yet they chose to remain silent
because they know that they could not support their children on their own.
Seven years, thats how long Ana bared a nightmare. The end of the aggression was not different from
others; she got sick, went to the hospital and the doctors informed her mother that she had a 23 week
pregnancy.
Afterward, the 14 year-old girl had the courage to reveal the sexual abuses she had suffered at home.
She didnt do it before because her step-father threatened to kill her.
On the other hand, the sexual attacks towards Gabriela didnt pass unnoticed for so many years.
Although she was a six year-old girl, she immediately told her mother what happened in her brothers
room. Now he is in prison paying his sentence.
Only in the first six months of 2015 there were 1,951 reports of these events in Ecuador. In other words,
every day at least 10 children or teenager suffer from sexual abuse.

Dinapen, the Ecuadorian institution specialized in child abuse, sends this kids to foundations in which
they are surrounded of a healthy environment that guarantees no more domestic violence. In Quito
there are seven of these centers.
Dinapen researchers listen to shocking cases each day. Luis Caceres reveals that in the last 10 months,
they have received 300 cases of violence against children and adolescents. Of these, 90 % were sexual.
It is time for society to be ashamed of these practices, because remaining indifferent means that we
continue to accept them.
