Woodpecker

Adapted from the poem Woodpecker by Brenda Williams.

On a bright sunny day, in the middle of the forest, a Woodpecker was flying in the
forest and stumbled upon a large and old apple tree.
Woodpecker

This is a perfect spot for me to spend the night. An

old tree like this might also have scrumptious insects
for my dinner.

(The woodpecker starts to tap on the trunk of the tree with its beak, as the time goes,
the momentum and speed builds up)
Apple tree

How dare you! Do you not know that I am the Great

Big Apple Tree. I have been in this forest before you
were even born! I have a body as tough as rock and
no one has ever disturbed me. Not even the eagles
dare to nest on my branch!

Woodpecker

(Tapping at the apple tree with its beak) This is

hard! But I need food and shelter for tonight.

Apple tree

Cant you see woodpecker? You cant win,

there is no way that you could bypass my body
armour!

Woodpecker

I cant give up! I have been blessed with this

strong and mighty beak, I will get what I want!
(Taps faster and harder)

Apple tree

You are going to need more than that. It is impossible for

you, such a weak and tiny bird to defeat me. Bring it to
me, bring me all that you have!

Woodpecker

Hmm. This is not working. I am going to need more force.

I will be back. (Woodpecker flies away)

Apple tree

Hah! Told you. You have wasted your time here. I am still
the mightiest in this forest! Haha haha!

After some time, the woodpecker came back with many of its friends.
Apple tree

What is this? I did not expect this!

Woodpecker

If being alone is not enough, then you can always count

on your friends.

With determination and collaboration, the woodpeckers focussed on one point at the
tree and take turns tapping on it.
(The flock of woodpecker breaks through the apple trees trunk)
Apple tree

Arghh! (Groaning) This is impossible, I have

been standing here for almost a decade, how
can a small and weak bird like you pierces
through my body?

Woodpecker

Finally, now my friends and I can eat and sleep here.

Thank you Mr Tree. (Cheering)
