Knowledge, Assessment and Care of Pediatric Client / Family

L-1-8 Demonstrate ability to assess need for pain management to
pediatric client
I do not have any hospital experience yet but personally, I have a
recent significant experience while I am taking this course that would
relate to this competency. This would be when my 4 y.o. nephew was
had a fall, hurt his foot and a had a wound. I was able to apply what I
have learned in NFDN 2005 on how to assess and how to manage pain
to my nephew.

Based on what I learned from this course, I was able to know the signs
that he is in pain such as crying, grimacing, restless, kicking, shouting
boo boo, etc. also, I was mindful that pain assessment and techniques
vary in children because we have to keep in mind the developmental
stage and age the child is in. So, for this child, I was able to assess
pain using FACES pain rating scale and Poker chip tool. Oral
analgesics, therapeutic communication as well as distraction
techniques were used. It was meaningful because it was the first time I
was able to apply what I have learned about pain assessment and
management in children and they were all effective and I was able to
help my nephew.
I would rate myself good because I have to practice more all of the
pain management techniques for children with different ages and I do
not have hospital experience yet, including caring with various
pediatric patients. Although, I was able to apply what I have learned in
this course and apply it in personal experiences, I think I need more
exposure. To achieve the competency, reading and fully
understanding the chapter in Pain management of Maternal and Child
Nursing book as well as applying what I have learned to daily
scenarios has helped me a lot in becoming effective in assessing pain
and pain management in children.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU
WILL APPLY THIS
LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE.

Assignment 3

I will apply this learning in my current and future nursing practice by

having notes or small guide book on assessment and pain
management, to carry with me all the time during hospital exposure so
that I will not forget and be refreshed with all the necessary
information needed when handling pediatric patients. In the future, I
should review what I have learned and apply these to my patients.
