Lesson 1 - Jesus Teaches Us About Love
The Parable of Good Samaritan, Luke 10: 2-36
Characters:
o A man who fell victim to robbers
o Priest - saw the victim on the road, but passed by the opposite side
o Levite - saw the victim, too, but passed by the opposite side
o Samaritan traveler - saw the victim and cared for him (The Samaritans are not accepted by the
Jews because of differences in culture and belief. They are considered enemies, but he still
helped the man.)
Moral lesson:
o Loving our neighbors should not be limited by their race, status, or physical appearance.
o The standard for loving others is how much a person cares for herself/himself. If we love
ourselves very much, then we should give the same amount of love to other people.
Qualities of a loving person according to the parable:
1. quick to help
2. generous
3. trustworthy / trusty
4. dependable
5. sensitive

o Osceola McCarty, 88 years old, a laundry woman in Mississippi, USA
o She dropped out of school in grade 6 to take care of a sick aunt.
o She never married and had no children.
o She saved money, including what is given to her by her mother and aunt.

1. Jesus love is forgiving. It does not keep a record of wrongdoing.
2. Jesus love is universal. It if offered without limitations or conditions. It is given freely and
equally to people of all ages, gender or nationality.
3. Jesus love is necessary. His way of life is life of love. His very person is a symbol of love.
Effects of Jesus powerful love:
1. Fellowship - we create bond with other members of the community. There is cooperation, unity, and
friendship and we are no longer strangers.
2. Service - Caring for one another makes helping each other a fund and easy thing to do.
It is not clear that:
Love is to be shown in deed, not just in words.
The corporal and spiritual works of mercy are ways and means of loving others as Jesus did.

1. THE AGONY AT THE GARDEN
o After the Last Supper, Jesus took Peter, James, and John to Gethsemane
o He prayed Not my will, but Yours will be done
2. THE ARREST OF JESUS
o Judas betrayed Jesus to the chief priest
o Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver
o Jesus was arrested by the soldiers after Judas kissed him
o Peter got angry and struck the ear of one of the soldiers
o Jesus reminded Peter that evil cannot be stopped by force or violence
3. PETERS DENIAL
o Peter and other disciples were left confused and scared after their Master was arrested
o Peter denied knowing Jesus 3 times.
o On the third time Peter denied Jesus, the cock crowed as Jesus predicted about him
4. JESUS BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN
o Caiaphas, the chief priest of the powerful council Sanhedrin
o Sanhedrin accused Jesus of blasphemy because Jesus claimed to be the Messiah and king of the
Jews
o They spat of Jesus face, slapped, and struck Him

5. JESUS BEFORE PILATE


o Pilate was the Roman governor who realized that Jesus was innocent
o Pilate did not want to judge Jesus so he sent him to Herod, the ruler of Galilee
o After mocking Jesus, Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate
o Pilate asked people if he could release Jesus but people wanted to release Barabbas
o People shouted Crucify him! Crucify Him!
6. THE MOCKERY OF THE SOLDIERS
o The soldiers stripped Jesus of his clothes and placed a scarlet cloak on His shoulder
o They made fun of Jesus kneeling and saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
7. JESUS CARRIES THE CROSS
o Crucifixion was a common way of putting to death the criminals at that time
o Jesus was made to carry His own cross through the streets of Jerusalem
o Simon of Cyrene was commanded to help him; certain women tearfully followed Jesus.
8. THE CRUCIFIXION AND DEATH OF JESUS
o Jesus was brought to Golgotha, or the Place of the Skull.
o Two criminals were crucified with him.
o A sign on Jesus said. This is Jesus, the King of the Jews
o Jesus entrusted Mother Mary to John, then died at 3:00 in the afternoon
o A great earthquake shook the place and torn the veil of the temple.
o The soldiers keeping watch said Truly, this was the Son of God
9. THE BURIAL OF JESUS
o The body Jesus was taken from the cross
o Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man, offered a new tomb where Jesus body was laid
o A huge stone closed the entrance of the tomb, and soldiers was sent by Pilated to guard the
tomb
10. THE RESUREECTION OF JESUS
o Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that it was empty
o She thought that the body of Jesus was taken away, but Jesus appeared and told her to tell the
disciples that He has risen.
SEVEN SHOUTOUTS
1. The Paschal Mystery of Jesus confirmed everything that He did and taught.
2. The sacrifice of Jesus is unique.
3. Jesus suffered, died, and rose again for our salvation.
4. For the people in the time of Christ, the cross was a symbol of shame. For us, it is a symbol of our
faith.
5. Because of Jesus love and obedience to God the Father, He turned evil into good.
6. Jesus offers us a never ending love.
7. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus freed us from sin and brought back our loving
relationship with God.

PASCHAL MYSTERY OF JESUS is the greatest


expression of His love for us and His obedience to
Gods plan to save us.
CROSS is a symbol of Jesus love and of our
salvation.
