Chapter 1 Overview
Chapter 1 Overview
The chapter introduces the structure, the system configuration and the physical
specifications of Quidway NetEngine20E Series Routers.
1.1 Introduction
Huaweis Quidway NetEngine20E Series Routers (hereafter referred to as NE20E
for short) is designed according to the roadmap of designing other high-end routers
developed by Huawei. It is targeted at the carrier aggregation layer and the
enterprise backbone layer network based on its own advantages, such as high
performance, double Routing Process Units (RPU), double Network Process Units
(NPU) and hot backup.
At present, NE20E only has NE20E-8 with adopts the modularized structure and
provides the High-speed Interface Card (HIC) and the Flexible Interface Card (FIC).
The hardware structure of the NE20E provides the following maintainable attributes:
z
Adopts the backplane in the middle. The boards are inserted in the backplane
horizontally. The structure is convenient for the configuration and maintenance.
The fan is located on the left of the router backplane. It uses multiple fans to
carry out the ventilation for the requirements of heat dissipation.
Besides, NE20E has effective monitoring system. It manages and maintains the
whole system by the main control module on the Routing Process Unit (RPU). RPU
can manage, monitor and maintain the board, the fan module and the power
module.
NE20E abide by the Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) and the Underwriter
Laboratories Inc. (UL). The whole system reaches the module-class shield level.
Every handle is made of steel sheet to isolate the electromagnetic wave of boards.
1.2 Structure
The NE20E-8 adopts the backplane in the middle and the integrated chassis with
the board inserted horizontally. The chassis is 6 U (1 U = 44.45 mm) high and can
be mounted in a 19-inch standard cabinet or on the workbench.

2.2 Functions
The NE20E-8 provide two types of the power modules, that is, the AC input and the
DC input. The power modules are inserted in the backplane from the back.
Hardware Description
Quidway NetEngine20E Series Routers
Usually, two power modules work in the redundancy backup mode. The AC and the
DC power modules are the PSR550-A and the PSR550-D power respectively. The
power line adopts the -48V feeder cable of D 3PIN.
The power module has the following functions:
z
When one of the power input is interrupted or some defects occur to the power
module, the other one is not affected and can provide the power to the whole
system. If the system needs to be powered off, you need to power off all the
configured power modules.
The power module provides various protection functions, including the input
over-voltage protection, the input under-voltage protection, the output over-flow
protection, the output over-voltage protection, the output short circuit protection
and the over-heat protection.
The power module supports the hot swap. The switching of the power module
does not affect the system running.
Note:
If you want to install an NE20E in the communication equipment room, you need to
make sure that the power distribution cabinet can provide the lightning protection box
or arrester against the current of 20 KA and above.

3.2 Functions
The rev of the fan module is controlled by the RPU. The fans working normally can
keep NE20E-8 working in the normal temperature. Its functions contain:
z
The fan module can modify the rev automatically. It configures two parameters,
the low-temperature threshold and the high-temperature threshold. The
low-temperature threshold and the high-temperature threshold correspond with
the revs of 100% and 50% respectively. For the operation requirements on the
temperature, see Chapter 1 Product Overview.

As the failure of a fan does not affect the operation of other fans, the system can
still be able to operate in the normal temperature.
The system sends out rotation stop alarm signals in case any fan fails.
The heat dissipation system of the NE20E-8 dissipates the heat by ventilating the
NE20E-8. From the top, you can see the air flow enters the NE20E-8 from left and
comes out from right. The air flow inside the NE20E-8 is shown in Figure 3-3.

4.12.1 Functions
Packet over SDH (POS) interface is a high-speed transport interface which takes
the SONET/SDH network as the transport interface. In sending direction, the POS
interface encapsulates IP data packets received from the NP with the PPP protocol
or HDLC protocol, and then maps the encapsulated data packets to the payload of
the SONET/SDH frame for transmission on the optical network. In receiving
direction, the POS interface receives optical signals, processes them through
reverse operations, and then sends them to the NP.
The POS interface board can be used to connect NE20E routers and SONET/SDH
devices together, or connect NE20E routers directly.

4.13.1 Functions
High Speed Serial Interface (HSSI) is connected by the HSSI cable. In the sending
direction, the IP data packet is PPP or HDLC encapsulated and sent to the HSSI
interface line after being transmitted into the ECL level serial data. In the receiving
direction, the serial ECL level data is transmitted into the TTL level and is processed
with the HDLC frame. Extract the IP data packet in the reverse process and forward
the IP data packet.
The NE20E with the HSSI interface can be connected to the DCE equipment
(CSU/DSU) as the DTE equipment or connected with the DTE equipment back to
back.
The functions of interface are as follows:

I. Straight-through Cable
Straight through cable is also called standard cable. The wire sequences of the
twisted pairs crimped in the RJ45 connectors at both ends are the same. It is used
for connecting a terminal device (PC or the router) to a HUB or a LAN Switch. The
cables delivered with the equipment are straight-through cables.

Chapter 5 Cable
SFP is in plug-in type. Both multi-mode module and single-mode module can be
plugged on the interface board. Different optical modules and optical connectors
need different fiber. The multi-mode interface module connects with the multi-mode
fiber; the single-mode module connects with the singlemode fiber.
The interfaces of ATM 155M and Ethernet optical module is equipped with SC
optical connector as shown in Figure 5-5. Therefore, you are recommended to use
the fiber with SC/PC optical connector. In addition, the optical interfaces of Gigabit
Ethernet optical interface module and POS optical interface module should apply LC
optical connector as shown in Figure 5-6. Therefore, you are recommended to use
the fiber LC/PC with optical connector.

Quidway NetEngine20E Series Routers
Chapter 5 Cable
I. DTE-to-DCE Cable
DTE-to-DCE cable is the straight-through cable. The line sequences of the twisted
pairs in the (DB-50) SCSI-II connectors of the two ends are the same. They are
used for the connection between the HSSI interface and the communication device
in the middle.
5.11.2 Structure
DTE-to-DCE cable and DTE-to-DTE cable are both the shielded twisted pair cables.
They adopt the (DB-50) SCSI-II and have the similar pin assignments as shown in
Figure 5-23.
