Chapter 1 Overview

Chapter 1 Overview
The chapter introduces the structure, the system configuration and the physical
specifications of Quidway NetEngine20E Series Routers.

1.1 Introduction
Huaweis Quidway NetEngine20E Series Routers (hereafter referred to as NE20E
for short) is designed according to the roadmap of designing other high-end routers
developed by Huawei. It is targeted at the carrier aggregation layer and the
enterprise backbone layer network based on its own advantages, such as high
performance, double Routing Process Units (RPU), double Network Process Units
(NPU) and hot backup.
At present, NE20E only has NE20E-8 with adopts the modularized structure and
provides the High-speed Interface Card (HIC) and the Flexible Interface Card (FIC).
The hardware structure of the NE20E provides the following maintainable attributes:
z

Supports hot swap.

Adopts the backplane in the middle. The boards are inserted in the backplane
horizontally. The structure is convenient for the configuration and maintenance.

The fan is located on the left of the router backplane. It uses multiple fans to
carry out the ventilation for the requirements of heat dissipation.

Besides, NE20E has effective monitoring system. It manages and maintains the
whole system by the main control module on the Routing Process Unit (RPU). RPU
can manage, monitor and maintain the board, the fan module and the power
module.
NE20E abide by the Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) and the Underwriter
Laboratories Inc. (UL). The whole system reaches the module-class shield level.
Every handle is made of steel sheet to isolate the electromagnetic wave of boards.

1.2 Structure
The NE20E-8 adopts the backplane in the middle and the integrated chassis with
the board inserted horizontally. The chassis is 6 U (1 U = 44.45 mm) high and can
be mounted in a 19-inch standard cabinet or on the workbench.

Chapter 2 Power Module

Usually, two power modules work in the redundancy backup mode. The AC and the
DC power modules are the PSR550-A and the PSR550-D power respectively. The
power line adopts the -48V feeder cable of D 3PIN.
The power module has the following functions:
z

When one of the power input is interrupted or some defects occur to the power
module, the other one is not affected and can provide the power to the whole
system. If the system needs to be powered off, you need to power off all the
configured power modules.

The power module provides various protection functions, including the input
over-voltage protection, the input under-voltage protection, the output over-flow
protection, the output over-voltage protection, the output short circuit protection
and the over-heat protection.

The power module supports the hot swap. The switching of the power module
does not affect the system running.

Note:
If you want to install an NE20E in the communication equipment room, you need to
make sure that the power distribution cabinet can provide the lightning protection box
or arrester against the current of 20 KA and above.

Air filter

The air filter and the fan module are placed separately. The air filter is located on the
right of the cabinet backplane. You can directly clean it after taking it out from the back
of the cabinet. For the details of the replacement and cleaning of the air filter, refer to
Quidway NetEngine20E Series Routers Installation Manual.
This chapter introduces the fan function, the fan appearance, the front panel and the
technical specifications of the NE20E-8.

3.1 Appearance and Front Panel

3.1.1 Appearance
The fan of the NE20E-8 is located on the left of the cabin backplane. It ventilates the
panel and dissipates the heat. The fan supports the hot swap.

z

The fan module can modify the rev automatically. It configures two parameters,
the low-temperature threshold and the high-temperature threshold. The
low-temperature threshold and the high-temperature threshold correspond with
the revs of 100% and 50% respectively. For the operation requirements on the
temperature, see Chapter 1 Product Overview.

Chapter 3 Heat Dissipation System

As the failure of a fan does not affect the operation of other fans, the system can
still be able to operate in the normal temperature.

The system sends out rotation stop alarm signals in case any fan fails.

The heat dissipation system of the NE20E-8 dissipates the heat by ventilating the
NE20E-8. From the top, you can see the air flow enters the NE20E-8 from left and
comes out from right. The air flow inside the NE20E-8 is shown in Figure 3-3.

Chapter 4 Board

Automatically identifies the V.35 and V.24/X.21 cables.

Supports various link layer protocols, such as PPP, Frame Relay and HDLC.

I. DTE and DCE

The 4SAE card is connected with a Modem and serves as a dialing port. In this case,
you need to set the appropriate baud rate.
The synchronous serial port can work in either DTE mode or DCE mode. Two
directly-connected devices work in DTE mode and DCE mode respectively. In this
case, the DCE device offers the synchronous clock and specifies the baud rate,
while the DTE device receives the synchronous clock and carries out
communication based on the specified baud rate.
Generically, the router serves as a DTE device. For the type (DCE or DTE) of the
device connected with the router, refer to the manual accompanying the device.
For the specified device types, you can see Table 4-29.

II. Synchronous Interface Rate and Transmission Distance

In different working modes, the synchronous serial port supports different electric
signal standards and baud rates. The set baud rate and the selected cable
determine the maximum transmission distance of the signal. For the relationship
between cable type, baud rate and maximum transmission distance of signals, see
Table 4-30.

4.12 Channelized or Unchannelized POS Optical Interface

Modules
The channelized/unchannelized POS optical interface modules of NE20E series
routers are as follows:
z

1-port channelized POS optical module (1CPOS(E))

1-port unchannelized POS/155M optical interface module (RT-HIC-1POS)

2-port unchannelized POS/155M optical interface module (RT-HIC-2POS)

4-port unchannelized POS/155M optical interface module (RT-HIC-4POS)

4.12.1 Functions
Packet over SDH (POS) interface is a high-speed transport interface which takes
the SONET/SDH network as the transport interface. In sending direction, the POS
interface encapsulates IP data packets received from the NP with the PPP protocol
or HDLC protocol, and then maps the encapsulated data packets to the payload of
the SONET/SDH frame for transmission on the optical network. In receiving
direction, the POS interface receives optical signals, processes them through
reverse operations, and then sends them to the NP.
The POS interface board can be used to connect NE20E routers and SONET/SDH
devices together, or connect NE20E routers directly.

5.1 DC Power Cable

5.1.1 Introduction
Direct Current (DC) power input range is from 36 V DC to 72 V DC.
The DC power cable contains the 48 V power cable NEG (), the power grounding
cable RTN (+) and the power protection grounding cable PGND. The power cable
transfers the 48 V DC power from the DC distribution equipment to the terminal
block of the NE20E power module, supplying power for the NE20E equipment.

Note:
The PGND cable of the power does not need to be connected. But the protection
grounding cable located on the back of the power module needs to be well
connected with the protection grounding cable of the chassis.

5.1.2 Structure
The wiring terminal of the NE20E power module is the OT bare pressure terminal.
The outline of DC power cable is shown in Figure 5-1.

5.5 Ethernet Cable

5.5.1 Introduction
The Ethernet cable contains two types: the straight-through cable and the crossover
cable. All are 3 m long.

I. Straight-through Cable
Straight through cable is also called standard cable. The wire sequences of the
twisted pairs crimped in the RJ45 connectors at both ends are the same. It is used
for connecting a terminal device (PC or the router) to a HUB or a LAN Switch. The
cables delivered with the equipment are straight-through cables.

II. Crossover Cable

Crossover cable is also called direct connection cable. The wire sequences of the
twisted pairs crimped in the RJ45 connectors at both ends are different. It is used for
connecting two terminal devices (PC or the router).

SFP is in plug-in type. Both multi-mode module and single-mode module can be
plugged on the interface board. Different optical modules and optical connectors
need different fiber. The multi-mode interface module connects with the multi-mode
fiber; the single-mode module connects with the singlemode fiber.
The interfaces of ATM 155M and Ethernet optical module is equipped with SC
optical connector as shown in Figure 5-5. Therefore, you are recommended to use
the fiber with SC/PC optical connector. In addition, the optical interfaces of Gigabit
Ethernet optical interface module and POS optical interface module should apply LC
optical connector as shown in Figure 5-6. Therefore, you are recommended to use
the fiber LC/PC with optical connector.

5.6.2 Optical Connector

The NE20E uses two types of optical connectors:
SC/PC optical connector

Chapter 5 Cable

5.11 HSSI Cable

5.11.1 Introduction
High Speed Serial Interface cable has two types, that is, the DTE-to-DCE cable
(HSSI Interface Cable) and the DTE-to-DTE (Null Modem Cable). All are 3 m long.

I. DTE-to-DCE Cable
DTE-to-DCE cable is the straight-through cable. The line sequences of the twisted
pairs in the (DB-50) SCSI-II connectors of the two ends are the same. They are
used for the connection between the HSSI interface and the communication device
in the middle.

II. DTE-to-DTE Cable

DTE-to-DTE cable is the crossover cable. The line sequences of the twisted pairs in
the (DB-50) SCSI-II connectors of the two ends are different. They are used for the
back-to-back connection among the DTE devices.

5.11.2 Structure
DTE-to-DCE cable and DTE-to-DTE cable are both the shielded twisted pair cables.
They adopt the (DB-50) SCSI-II and have the similar pin assignments as shown in
Figure 5-23.
