Development Management (with specialist pathways) MSc

University of Birmingham
Info program
Isi program
The Development Management programme aims to enable students to engage with current
debates in development management, such as the interaction and roles of different stakeholder
groups, the nature of public management and measures of governance performance. Each
programme is taught by a team of multi-disciplinary specialists who work closely with students
to address individual interests and concerns. Every student is allocated an academic tutor to
support them in their academic progress throughout the year. The department has a long history
of teaching students from across the world, and recent students have come from 99 different
countries and a wide variety of professional and academic backgrounds. The programme is
designed for those who want to improve their knowledge and skills in development management,
from a wide range of sectors, including central and local government, NGOs and donors, and at
the same time acquire an academic qualification. The programme is designed for officials, policy
analysts and researchers concerned with economic and social development. They may work in
central or local government, public enterprises, non-governmental organisations, and research or
training organisations. The programme is also appropriate for those who are hoping to enter a
career in the field of development. The programme uses a range of learning and teaching
methods including short lectures, group work, group and individual presentations, individual
study and exercises. Each module is assessed differently using assessments that include 2000
3000 word essays, group projects, presentations, exercises and exams. A 10,00012,000 word
dissertation is also required for the MSc award. This Masters degree enable students either to
carry out individual fieldwork in a country and on a topic of their choice or to take part in an
organised study visit. Funding for this overseas study is included in the programme fee. Some of
these are targeted to help you build skills and experience for your CV, others are more open
events designed to expose you to high-level speakers on current debates relevant to all
Government and Society students. We are extremely proud of the achievements of our alumni;
many of them have gone on to do fantastic things post graduation including Concy Aciro (MSc
Poverty Reduction, 2007) who won the University's alumna of the year award in 2008.
