Department of Electrical Engineering

About The Department
The Electrical Engineering Department was established as part of the Thomson College in the year 1897, and was
one of the earliest such specializations in the world when the discipline itself was in its infancy.
The first batch of Electrical Engineering students graduated in 1900 from the Thomason College of Engineering. For a
few years, between 1923 and 1946, a special committee had recommended that the College may be converted into a
purely Civil Engineering Institution, but another special committee favoured the reopening of the other disciplines of
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The present Department of Electrical Engineering came into being in 1946 and
the first batch of electrical engineering graduates passed out of this college in 1949. Initially, the Department offered
courses with options in both Electrical Engineering and Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, and
subsequently in 1964, the department was bifurcated to from two distinct Departments of Electrical Engineering and
Electronics and Communication Engineering.
The Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee is the first in India to start the postgraduate programme in
Electrical Machine Design in 1954 and after few years it was converted into Advanced Electrical Machines. Later on
three more post-graduate programmes were started. At present, the department offers post-graduate programme in
four specializations: Electric Drives and Power Electronics, Power System Engineering, Instrumentation and Signal
Processing and Systems and Control. In year 2007, a five year Integrated Dual-Degree (IDD) programme was started.
It offers B. Tech in Electrical Engineering and M. Tech in Power Electronics. The department also took initiative in
research programme and the first Ph.D. from the department was awarded in year 1969.
Presently the Department offers B. Tech, IDD, M. Tech. and Ph.D. programmes and provides excellent facilities to
carry out research work on sponsored/consultancy projects from Government, public sector and private industries.
The faculty of Department of Electrical Engineering participated actively in professional activities and contributed
significantly to industrial consultancy.

Academic Programmes
Undergraduate
The undergraduate degree programme is designed to provide exposure to a broad background in
fundamental core courses with the newest developments in electrical engineering. The programme
offers courses in a wide variety of specializations including analog and digital electronics, systems and
controls, microprocessor and micro-controller, instrumentation, electromagnetics, digital signal
processing, power systems, and Power electronics and drives. The programme also offers range of
department and interdisciplinary institute level elective courses to enhance the student's
competitiveness in the professional career and higher studies. In addition, the emphasis is given to
practical learning by including a major and a minor B. Tech. project in the curriculum. This empowers a
student to assess problem with a wider scope resulting in ingenuitive solutions.

Postgraduate
The Department is one of the oldest and well established postgraduate programmes in the country
started in 1954. Presently, the Department offers M. Tech. courses in four areas of specializations viz.
Instrumentation and Signal Processing, Electric Drives and Power Electronics, Power System
Engineering, and Systems and Control. The programmes are designed to prepare the students to
make the mark in their field, whether it is product design, engineering analysis, management, research
and development, higher studies or consulting. Also, the Ph.D. degree in the department is designed to
prepare the students for careers in academics and research & development.

Message from The Head of Department

The Department of Electrical Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, came into being
during this early days of the oldest technical Institute of Asia established in 1847. By virtue of this it
holds the distinction of being one of the oldest Electrical Engineering Departments in the World. The
Department imparts education in Electrical Engineering discipline, both at the undergraduate and
postgraduate levels. Since its inception the department has produced more than 175 PhDs, besides
its faculty members participating in a big way in various technical committees at national level. The
faculty members have earned various awards and distinctions for their contribution to knowledge. The
Department strives to keep abreast with the latest changes in technology and therefore, the
curriculum is revised periodically.
This Profile provides information on the various courses offered by the Department and highlights the
main Research and Consultancy areas and also contains a brief profile of the faculty, Ph.Ds awarded;
research papers published and jobs acquired by the students.
It is expected that this Profile will be found useful by all concerned with Electrical Engineering Education.
