Basic Information
Full Name: Joanna Hanley
Title of Project: Graphic Novel Creation
Thematic Area(s): Creavity
Expected Start Date: October 10th
Expected End Date: November 20th
GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
I plan to create a short graphic novel. It is something I have wanted to try, as the idea of telling a story through a
visual medium is interesting to me. It also will allow me to do personal art outside of my work in industrial design classes,
which I have missed. Along with the exciting experience of attempting something new, the experience will strengthen
preexisting my skills as an artist and a designer in ways I can take with me in future projects.
The goals of the experience would be to learn the process of creating a graphic novel, finish a full story in the
graphic novel format, learn new techniques in digital and other mediums, show artistic improvement over the period of
creating the graphic novel, and to learn about and use online spaces to display the finished product.
The process will have four parts. First, I must create and finalize the idea of the
story. This should take a period of one to two weeks (at least 10 hours) of brainstorming
then writing and editing. Then, I must create concept art for characters and settings
and the overall art style of the graphic novel. Both of these parts will involve research.
This will take about 10 hours or more. Then, the third step is the creation of the actual
pages. This is difficult to create a time estimate for because discovering how long a
page takes to makes and finding an effective workflow are part of the learning process,
but it will be the longest part of the process. Depending on the size of the graphic
novel, which I estimate the range of 20 to 60 pages, it will take at least 40 hours.
Finally, I will finalize and display my work, which through editing and proofreading,
finding the best way to show the work, and then actually uploading, should take 5
hours. Reflection on the process should take well over 10 hours.

2. Experience Advisor
Identify an experience advisor and provide their contact information. Explain why you chose this person and how you
plan to utilize your advisor for this experience.
3
Note: Advisor(s) should have knowledge or expertise in an area related to the experience. Honors advisors, undergraduate
students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.
Linda Augutis linda.augutis@lakotaonline.com
As my art instructor throughout my high school education, she is knowledgeable in 2D art, and can critique my style and
composition from the perspective of someone who has seen my art evolve and knows where I should improve. I plan to
utilize her in showing her my progress and asking for suggestions.

List 3 learning outcomes from any thematic area(s). Provide specific activities you plan to engage in to help you make
progress towards the chosen learning outcomes. Describe how you expect each activity to help your progress. Include an
estimated time commitment for those activities.
Discover new techniques to gain knowledge, consider options, make new connections,
and ask questions.
Besides the use of the academic resource to form a new understanding of comics as an art form,
I plan to use other graphic novels as research and inspiration for the creation of the graphic
novel. Learning by example in this way will give me new insight into the many different
possibilities available in making comic, and I will let these discoveries guide my creative
process. I also wish to seek out the writings of graphic novel artists on their work process, to
see what I can learn.
I have never tried creating a graphic novel before. I will be a new experience both in creating
the pages themselves and the planning that goes into the story before the pages can be
produced. It is also a new way to engage in my skills in digital tools like Photoshop and in
drawing as a medium, as comic pages will make me employ new techniques.
Identify personal strengths and areas of growth and evaluate opportunities to maximize
skills and abilities.
The process of creating a graphic novel engages many skills. The story and writing, the
art direction, and the planning and time management of making something in a page by
page process are all different skills. In creating the graphic novel, I will identify where

my strengths are as an artist and try to employ those strengths in ways that develop the
best end result. I will also learn which skills I need to improve over the course of the
project. I plan to engage this learning outcome in my reflections.
All of these will be engaged throughout the project, but concentrated in specific areas of the process, which has been
blocked out for time commitment in the abstract.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
5
Reflection will take place both in drawings and in journal writing. For both the story creation process and any decisions I
come to in the creation of the novel, such as how long the novel will be, I plan to write explanations. I will also record my
thoughts on the process itself and what I am learning and improving. Concepts, such as designs for settings, characters, or
specific scenes and pages, will have their creation process catalogued in the form of sketches. I will also reflect on my
strengths and weaknesses as an artist throughout the project.
