Fire protection from below / from below and from above (Plenum)
Subceilings with sole fire rating
For fire exposure from below, the fire
rating of the "subceiling solely" covers
the constructions above, such as
ceiling or roof constructions.
(e. g. trapezoid sheet metal roofs)

From above

Fire exposure from the ceiling plenum.

The ceiling or roof construction above
has to be of the same fire rating.

K219 Knauf Free-spanning Fireboard Ceiling A1

Construction, Application, Filling / Coats and linings

Construction
Knauf Free-Spanning Fireboard Ceilings A1 are
solely anchored on the walls at perimeter. Knauf
Fireboard (gypsum fleece boards of building material class A1) are fastened to a metal substructure made of Knauf CW double profiles. The application of additional loads like lighting fixtures with
max. 100 N (10 kg) per double profile (50 N per m
ceiling area) with suitable anchors directly to the
metal substructure is permissible.

Joints (extensions) of free-spanning profiles are

NOT allowed. Movement joints of the main structure have to be taken over into the construction of
the Knauf Fireboard Ceilings. Use control joints in
the case of ceiling areas over approx. 15 m length,
or for narrow ceiling spaces caused by a break of
a wall. Separate connections of Knauf Fireboard to
components made of materials other than gypsum,
especially columns, or thermally highly stressed

built-ins like lighting fixtures, with control joints that

allow for movement, e. g. shadow gaps.
Knauf profiles are delivered galvanized. The corrosion protective coating is sufficient for indoor
application, including bathrooms and kitchens in
private housing. For other areas, e. g. under influence of outdoor air, additional corrosion protection is necessary (see DIN 18168-1 table 2).

with Metal Screws LB 3.5 x 9,5 mm at a spacing

of 750 mm max.
Support length of CW double profiles in UW perimeter runners has to be at least 30 mm. Connect both top flanges of CW double with the UW
runner by riveting /crimping or screwing with LB
3.5 x 9.5, if no covering strip is required.
Only in case of fire protection solely from below
AND from above: Fasten Knauf Fireboard strips,
12.5 mm thick, 120 mm wide, as covering strips
on top and bottom of the CW double profiles alternating with Drywall Screws TN 3.5 x 25 mm
at a spacing of 250 mm max. Connection of CW
double profiles with UW perimeter profiles acc.
to page 3.

at the board edges in order to avoid buckling.

Firmly push Fireboard to substructure and fasten with Drywall Screws TN at a spacing of 170
mm alternating on the CW double profiles.
In case of double layer cladding, the spacing of
the screws can be increased for the first layer to
500 mm if the second layer is applied immediately afterwards (on the same day).
Only in case of fire protection solely from below
AND from above: Apply covering layer of Knauf
Fireboard 20 mm without fastening, tightly jointed.
Fastening of 20 mm thick Fireboard with Drywall
Screws TN 3.5 x 45 mm /
2 x 20 mm with TN 3.5 x 45 mm + TN 3.5 x 55
mm.
Apply Knauf Trenn-Fix 65 on connections to adjacent components and fill connection joints with
Fireboard Filler.

Application
If the free-spanning ceiling is connected (anchored) to a lightweight partition (F90), an additional, 20 mm thick Fireboard cladding layer is required for the partition on the side of the supporting connection.
Substructure
Supporting perimeter connection made of UW
Profiles. Anchoring acc. to table on page 3. In
case of connection to a lightweight partition
(F90) and fire protection from below AND from
above, apply Flex Profile underneath the additional Fireboard layer on the partition for the anchoring of the supporting perimeter runner.
Spacing of anchors in this case: 312.5 mm
In case of sound protection requirements, seal
up carefully with Acoustical Sealant according
to DIN 4109, supplement 1, chapter 5.2; porous
sealant strips like Sealing Tape are usually not
suitable in this case.
Connect CW Profiles as double profiles at web

Cladding
Apply Knauf Fireboard parallely to CW double
profiles. Place long edge joints on profiles.
Stagger front edge joints by 400 mm min.
Start fastening Fireboards in the board centre or

Filling / Coats and linings

Filling material
Hand filling with Knauf Fireboard Filler and Knauf
Fibre Glass Joint Tape.
Application
In case of double layer cladding, fill joints of first
layer, fill and smooth joints of top layer. Fill all visible screw heads. Recommendation: Fill front edge
joints of visible layers with Fibre Glass Joint Tape
as well.
Application temperature/climate
Filling of joints should only take place after the
boards have been allowed to rest in the given humidity and temperature zones, and no more longitudinal changes can be expected, i. e. expansion
or contraction.
Joints should be filled at a minimum temperature
of +10 C (50 F).
In case of mastic asphalt screed, fill joints after
screed has been applied.
