MR. KS EIGHTH GRADE ALGEBRA MATHEMATICS SYLLABUS

EIGHTH GRADE ALGEBRA CURRICULUM

The topics we will cover this year are:
Functions, Linear Relationships, Simplifying and Solving, Systems of Equations,
Exponential Functions, Quadratic Functions, Solving Quadratics and Inequalities,
Solving Complex Equations, Functions and Data, Intro to Geometry

TEXTBOOK(S)
The textbooks will all be online. We are using a book called the CPM series. If you are
unable to use the online textbook, please let me know and I will give you a hard copy.
This needs to be turned in at the end of the year or you will be responsible for the
replacement cost.

ATTENDANCE & TARDY POLICY

My tardy policy:
Be in your seat ready to start class with materials and homework ready.
All tardies will be filed with the attendance office

HOMEWORK & MAKE-UP WORK

Homework will not be graded. The homework will be looked at in class the day it is
due and we will go over it as a class. Students will then get a score out of 5. 5 if they
TRIED to do all of it or completed it, 4 if they didnt do all of the problems, and 1 if they
only do the work from the day before.
The homework will be from their new textbook, the CPM series. This series gives
Homework Help online at:
http://homework.cpm.org/cpm-homework/homework/category/CC/textbook/CCA

This website gives the answers to most problems and steps to get to those answers (aka.
Hints). This will give the students a chance to see how to do the problems.
The homework in this textbook is different than most. This textbook does something
called Review and Preview, which means that the homework isnt on the chapter, its
on things they have learned previously. The idea is that the students continue seeing
what they have previously learned throughout the year.
Students who have an excused absence will be allowed to make-up missed
assignments for full credit. Activities, tests, and quizzes can be made-up during lunch
by appointment. Setting up make-up times with the teacher is the students
responsibility.

ASSESSMENTS
There will be two different types of Assessments in this course. There will be Quizzes
and Tests.
Quizzes: There will be small quizzes on the material we learn in class. You will
be able to re-take these quizzes one time within a week from when we take it as a
class for the first time. These re-takes will need to be taken during lunch and is
the responsibility of the student to approach the teacher.
Tests: There will be tests every chapter. I will be breaking the tests up into small
sections based on content. The students will have a chance to see how they did
based on those sections and are able to re-take those specific sections on the test
to help improve their knowledge of the material.

ONLINE INFORMATION & RESOURCES

My blog online will be the place to be to get information regarding the class. The blog
can be located at http://mrkbayviewmath.weebly.com/ I will post what we did that
day in class, as well as the homework that we either did in class or that needs to finish at
home.
