Features and Benefits

Deep shear wave imaging

Locates and maps formation
features such as fractures and
bedding planes more than 50 ft
away from the wellbore

The Baker Hughes XMAC F1 service

provides the superior acoustic data needed
to lower costs, mitigate risks, and maximize
reservoir production. An advanced,
full-wave monopole, in-line dipole, and
cross-dipole service, the XMAC F1 acquires
accurate acoustic data in a wide variety of
challenging conditions. These include large
holes, ultraslow formations, andwith the
Nautilus Ultra XMAC F1 toolhigh-pressure,
high-temperature (HP/HT) wells.
Using techniques similar to those used
in seismic processing, reflections from
formation features more than 50 ft away
from the borehole can be extracted from
the cross-dipole shear waveform data. This
enables detection of vertical fractures that
dont intercept the borehole, which aids
in field development and the planning of
hydraulic fracture programs.
Recent advancements in acoustic
processing use information derived
from cross-dipole data to determine if
the cause of the detected anisotropy is

stress-induced or intrinsic in nature. A

radial map of the near wellbore region is
created to visualize changes in velocity
moving away from the wellbore, helping
determine the extent of formation
alterations caused by the drilling process.
Delta-T, fullwave monopole, and
cross-dipole waveforms are acquired
simultaneously in a single logging run at 30
ft/min. This reduces rig time while providing
all of the acoustic data needed for a full
range of answers, including Stoneley
slowness and permeability index, azimuthal
anisotropy, VTI anisotropy, thin bed
analysis, rock mechanical properties, and
fluid identification with a light hydrocarbon
indicator.
The XMAC F1 uses coplanar orthogonal
(X and Y) dipole transmitters which, when
combined with an eight-level array of four
orthogonal receivers, results in a true crossdipole measurement, providing reliable
results in low-anisotropy environments.

have superior low-frequency performance, ensuring

acquisition of high-quality shear wave data. This
eliminates the need for dispersion correction, even in
large holes and unconsolidated,
low-velocity formations.

With the XMAC F1, Baker Hughes uses industry-leading,

cross-dipole technology to offer a complete range of
acoustic measurements to help customers appraise,
develop, and manage their reservoirs.

Built with an acoustic isolator that eliminates rotation

between transmitters and receivers, The XMAC F1
provides stable, fast shear azimuth determination even
when the rate of tool rotation is high. The isolator
is constructed to eliminate tool arrivals caused by
acoustic waves traveling through the tool body, while
its strength means that the tool can be deployed safely
using PCL in horizontal and highly deviated wellbores
without any compromise in data quality.
