CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains background, problem statement, objective of the
research, significance of the research, and the scope of the research.
A. Background
In learning language, students must be able to understand the words that they
use. At least, they recognize the words and how to use them in a rule of language,
especially English. Words are divided into different kinds or classes, called parts
of speech. There are eight parts of speech, they are: noun, adjective, pronoun,
verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection (Wikipedia).
Adjective is one of the parts of speech. It is used to talk or write about a
person, place or thing, by using nouns like girl, house, or tree, descriptions need to
be added to those nouns, by adding detail of words in front of the noun like little,
blue, rich, and old. It can give the reader a clearer picture of what speaker or
writer mean. According to Palmer (2003:22) adjective is a word that qualifies
(describes) a noun. Adjective is words that describe or modify a noun (person or
thing). In the sentence they are good teachers, the adjective is good. Sometimes
two or more adjectives are used together. It is because, the noun that is described
can be more than one adjective. When a number of adjectives are used together,
the order depends on the function of the adjective.

Word order of adjective and degree of adjective is one of the materials that
learned in vocational junior high school. Every student is expected to able to use

word order of adjective in phrase, sentence or in their English simple


communication. However, the fact is that most students can describe person or
thing correctly if they only use one adjective but when the sentence has two or
more adjectives they are did the mistakes. Based on my experience in teaching
practice, I asked every student to put the correct adjectives with the word order of
adjectives in a sentence, for example: I have a ........pencil case. (new, small),
Students answer is I have a new small pencil case. The correct sentence is I have
a small new pencil case. Because the sequence of adjective order are arranged by
determiner(1), opinion(2), size(3), age(4), color(5), origin(6), material(7) and
noun(8), (Murphy:1994). and the other problems that are
faced of students is the use of er-, est, more, and most in comparisons. I got
this problem when I observed in class VIII at SMPN 4 Bajeng.
How to make the teaching of adjective more effective? There are some of
method has used by teacher to make students understand concerning, spelling,
pronunciation, meaning, and use adjective in a sentence. Method in teaching is
process or procedure that used by teacher to get the goal or competence. One of
the method is used the systematic approach. By choosing appropriate method it
can help the student to get the purposes of the study and get the material
(Smaldino in Noviq.2011:4). Systematic away is the perspective that consider a
system as unified whole with the components through a systematic approach, we
can understand the learning process as something that needs to be designed in a
systemic and systematic approach. Through this approach can also be interpreted

as a logical and repetitive process that can be used to improve and enhance the
quality of the learning program (Dick and Carey, 2005: 367).
The researcher also think that, this approach is the procedure used by the
designers of learning systematic design to create more effective and efficient
learning. Through this approach, the designer will focus on learning goals to be
achieved and by applying this approach; systematic designer will be able to see
the relevance of learning between each component. Through feedback
mechanism, systematic designer of learning can do revise that needed to increase
the result of learning.
Implementation of systematic approach in system design of learners,
conducted in all phase covering analysis, design, development, implementation
and evaluation. This model need to created instruction design which able to use in
an optimal way to solve and more effective the problem in study, especially in
teaching adjective material.
Based on explanation above, the researcher inspired to do the research
with topic Using Systematic Approach in Teaching English Adjectives at
The Second Year Students of Junior High School.

B. Problem Statement
Based on the previous background, the researcher formulated the main
research question as follows: Does the use of the systematic approach have
effect at the second year students of junior high school to mastery of English
adjectives?
C. Objective of the Research

The researcher intends to find out the effect of teaching English adjectived
by using the systematic approach with the student achievement of the second year
students of junior high school to learn English adjectives.
D. Significant of the Research
The researcher do hopes that this research can give much significance
practically and theoretically. Practically, this research will give significance such
as:
1. For the teacher
In this research, the researcher hopes that this result of research will give
benefit for the teacher in teaching process in order to improve their quality of
teaching English, especially English adjectived.
2. For the students
The researcher hopes that the students can (a) improve their English
adjectived, (b) be motivated to learn English and (c) study English adjectived
becomes interesting and challenging.
3. For the researcher
This research can give information for the next researcher who has the
same study of research.
Theoretically, in this research the researcher hopes that this research will give
beneficial for the future research on increasing English adjective by using
systematic approach.
E. Scope of the Research
By discipline, the study is under applied linguistics. This researcher covers
on students learning adjective by using systematic approach in teaching adjective
of the second year students in junior high school. By content, this research is
focused on the teaching adjective as general especially order and degree of
adjectives by using ASSURE Model as one of models in systematic approach

design. The researcher choose this model because it can develop to create learning
activity to be effectively and efficient and this model is also more simple or easy
to implementing in the class.
