CAT 2013 Syllabus

CAT 2013 Syllabus: Officially, there is no CAT 2013 syllabus declared or announced by IIMs.
According to the CAT 2013 Convener, the CAT 2013 syllabus will remain the same. CAT 2013
exam will have two sections, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability &
Logical Reasoning.
According to the IIMs, the CAT 2013 syllabus will be the same as what you studied for Class
VII to Class XII in Mathematics and English. The best way to prepare for CAT 2013 is by
following the NCERT books of mathematics and the basic grammar book of Wren & Martin for
English. In reality, CAT 2013 syllabus is much more than that, but dont fret. All you need is to
smartly plan your preparation.
The first step is to get abreast with the CAT 2013 syllabus is know the topics or the subjects
which appear in the CAT exam. Let us check the CAT 2013 syllabus according to the four areas,
Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.
CAT 2013 Syllabus for Quantitative Ability
The basic syllabus of the Quantitative Ability areas of CAT 2013 is as follows:

Arithmetic

Algebra

Geometry

Number System

Modern Mathematics

Higher Maths

Mensuration

Trigonometry

Out of the 20 questions that will be asked in the Quantitative Ability part of the first section,
majority of the questions will arrive from the Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry parts. Out of the
broad areas mentioned above, the topics which are common within them include the following:

HCF, LCM, arithmetic progression, arithmetic mean, geometric progression, geometric mean,
harmonic mean, median, mode, BODMAS, Ratio and proportion, percentage, Average,
partnership, time speed distance, work and time, Profit and loss, Installment and payments,
partnership, clocks, work & time, pipe and cisterns, lines, angles, triangles, spheres rectangles,
cubes, cone to name a few.
CAT 2013 Syllabus for Data Interpretation
The Data Interpretation part, as the name suggests, includes questions on the following topics:

Pie Chart

Bar Graph

Line Graph

Tables

Combination of Graphs

Caselet

Data Sufficiency

The Data Interpretation part of the Section 1 of CAT 2013 will have 10 questions. According to
the past few years trend, the questions are calculation intensive and on the higher side of the
difficulty level. The majority of the questions are on caselets and combination of graphs. The
Data Sufficiency questions also form a good chunk.
CAT 2013 Syllabus for Verbal Ability
Verbal Ability part of CAT 2013 Section 2 will have 20 questions. The questions can be divided
into two halves, Reading Comprehension (RC) and English Usage (EU). There will be 3 Reading
Comprehension passages followed by 4 to 5 questions each. The length of the RC passages range
from 250 to 300 words.
The English Usage questions are on the following topics:

Para Completion

Fact Inference Judgment

Word Usage (Vocabulary)

CAT 2013 Syllabus for Logical Reasoning


Logical Reasoning will amount to 10 questions in the CAT 2013 exam. As the name suggests, the
topics will be as follows:

Data Arrangement

Seating Arrangement

Blood Relations

Family Tree

Venn Diagram

Matching Puzzles

Constraint based puzzles

Syllogism

Proposition

Assumptions

Statements

Binary Logic

Clocks and Calendars

Sets

As such, there is no defined CAT 2013 syllabus. The above mentioned topics are provided to
you on the basis of the past years trends and analysis. The questions of CAT 2013 are most
likely to range within these areas. However, there is always room for surprise where CAT 2013

syllabus is concerned, so it is wise to be prepared and select the questions carefully on the D
Day.
