Early in January 2015 the longstanding btc exchange Bitstamp had their hot wallet
attacked with a loss of over 18k btc. The attack appears to have been a phishing
scheme and not an actual computer hack and as such Bitstamps insurance
company has refused to recuperate the losses.
A mysterious company, known originally as 21e6 but later dubbed 21 inc raised
over $100 million in the first half of 2015 and announced plans to integrate mining
chips into a number a items.
GBTC started trading after the required 1 year waiting period. It is a bitcoin
investment trust where customers can buys shares equal to 0.1 btc, it is similar to
the XBT (Bitcoin Tracker One) in Sweden which had already been online.

Trial of Ross Ulbricht

The attempted murder charges were never formally brought forward due to lack of
evidence.
The trial in 2015 went on for 13 days.
Ross Ulbricht was found guilty on all counts and was sentenced to life
imprisonment without the possibility of parole on 29 May 2015.
Some of the people working on the site were also arrested. Phillip Nash tells has
told reporters about his arrest and time in prison for 18 months. Andrew Jones,
Silk Roads second-in-command Inigo was arrested in Virginia, USA. Gary Davis,
accused of being administrator Libertas was picked up in Ireland. All at roughly
the same time.

The Defense Objects

Reporters in the courtroom published recaps at the end of each day.
The defense tried arguing that bitcoin wasn't money which was not approved by
the judge.
They argued that the FBI broke several laws obtaining the information and them
performed something called 'parallel construction' which is an illegal practice
where they fake how they got evidence but this was dismissed on a technicality.
The witnesses against Ulbricht were kept secret because the judge claimed
Ulbricht could threaten them otherwise.
Ulbricht's defense says they were denied witnesses, also that Ross created the
site but sold it but they werent allowed to mention that.

What Really Happened at Silk Road?

We may never know the truth, but logs, testimony, and interviews from those
involved show a strange picture.
Ross's journal indicate he was being blackmailed in April of 2013 by someone who
claimed to know his ID. Ross had lots of education but in Physics not computer
science. As a result user passwords and info were taken, for which he was
blackmailed. He made notes saying he paid hackers.
An administrator of SR was arrested and recovered logs indicated Ross tried to
pay $80,000 to have him killed, but that hitman turned out to be a gov agent.

Hired Murders?
Ulbricht was accused of ordering the killing of former SR employee Curtis Green in
2013 for $80,000 and then paying a user known as redandwhite $150,000 in btc
to kill a SR user identified as FriendlyChemist, who was allegedly blackmailing
Ulbricht for half a million USD.
In court, Prosecutor Turner added four more attempted murders, saying that
FriendlyChemist had implicated another user and redandwhite had told Ulbricht
that user and his housemate would need to go. Ulbricht allegedly agreed to have
all four killed for $500,000 in bitcoins.
It is a strange note that while everything else Ulbricht did online used bitcoin the
first $80,000 transfer was a wire transfer from bank account to bank account.

Selling Seized Assets

The US Marshall's decided to auction off the bitcoins that were allegedly confiscated
from Ross. This was seen as a sign of legitimacy of the Bitcoin network and token by
many within the community.
A first auction of 30,000 btc was held in June 27th, 2014 with the bitcoin being sold in
block sections of a few thousand. A venture capitalist named Tim Draper won all the
bitcoin that round.
A second round of 50,000 btc was held in December, '14 with 2,000 btc going to
Draper and the rest going to a man named Barry Silbert from SecondMarket, which is a
transaction software.
A third auction of 50,000 btc on March 5th 2015. And the last 44,341 were sold on
November 5th.

Corruption Uncovered
In the time between Ulbrichts trial and his sentencing an alarming story came to
light. Evidence was presented that two federal agents had stolen hundreds of
thousands of dollars worth of bitcoin and were abusing their powers and extorting
individuals and businesses.
The evidence shows they stole nearly one million dollars worth of bitcoin and then
tried to cash out. They registered with Venmo who flagged the account of Carl
Mark Force IV, an ex-special agent with the DEA. In response Carl sent them
emails saying he was a DEA agent, he tried to have them investigated and their
bank accounts seized, and sent them fake a subpoena.

Carl Mark Force IV was allegedly working with the second agent named Shaun
Bridges, formerly with the Secret Service. Shawn was connected to the Mt Gox
case, providing evidence for a search warrant.
Evidence provided by Mark Karpeles indicates that Force emailed Mt. Gox,
presumably to help launder the stolen btc. When Karpeles refused the agents
had Gox's bank account frozen. Force allegedly sent Karpeles an email
afterwards with a smiley face in the subject line and saying 'Told you should have
partnered with me!' [sic]
During this time Carl got a job as a 'compliance officer' at a bitcoin trading
platform, where he used customer information to target then seize funds. In one
incident he seized about $300,000 in btc but only gave the DEA $30,000 in fiat.

Suspicious Activities
After Curtis Green, a SR admin, was arrested the two agents were present at the
start of the interrogation. Green gave details of how the website operated and
explained how to perform a number of actions.
Shawn Bridges left this interrogation before it was concluded and later that day the
website the SR was 'hacked' and ' a sizable' amount of bitcoins were stolen worth
over $800,000 at the time. The bitcoins were sent to Mt Gox in late January 2013.
Bridges formed Quantum International Investments, LLC, and opened a bank
account in Quantums name. The account only ever received transfers from Mt.
Gox. The Quantum account received nine wire transfers, approximately totaling
$820,000 from gox and two days later Bridges created a seizure affidavit for Gox.

Carl Mark Force IV & Shaun Bridges

The agents are also alleged to have extorted over $100,000 from Ulbricht alone.
Force used aliases to communicate with Ulbricht, threatening to turn him in with
one alias and signing a message with his real name using another alias.
In the story of DPR paying a hitman $80,000 to take out a rogue admin (C.G.) the
'hitman' was Force. In addition Force signed away the rights to a movie deal on all
these events for $240,000.
Forces activity was flagged on the exchange Bitstamp.
In Spring 2014 investigations into the two officers began.

Carl Mark Force IV & Shaun Bridges Continued

When a federal investigation on him was in progress he emailed Bitstamp asking if
they could delete all records related to his transactions.
Between 2012 and 2013, while Force was investigating the Silk Road, he
deposited into his bank account about three times the amount of money he was
making on his government salary. He also paid off the mortgage on his house,
repaid a $22,000 government loan, wired $235,000 to an offshore account in
Panama, and invested tens of thousands of dollars in real estate and stocks.
There are implications that these two former officers may have been behind the
takedowns of a number of bitcoin related businesses. In addition there are now
questions as to their actions as members of the Silk Road Task Force.

Busted
The men resigned before their arrests and were charged with wire fraud and
money laundering.
Bridges was sentenced to 71 months in prison on charges of money laundering
and obstruction of justice after pleading guilty in October 2015. He was ordered to
give up over $470,000 and pay another $500,000 in restitution.
Force was sentenced by Judge Seeborg to 6.5 years in prison on charges of to
money laundering, obstruction of justice, and extortion under color of official right
after pleading guilty in June 2015. Force was ordered to pay back over $200,000
and 700 btc.

2015 Picks Up Development

Bank and other corporate interest in bitcoin grew and more companies announced
their plans to create projects.
The blockchain became a popular buzzword in financial circles, the idea that
blockchains will change everything began appearing in corporate media articles.
Development on blockchain technologies greatly increased, ledge agnostic
blockchains that can work with any token such as Bitcoin, Ether, or
Milky-Way-Coin.
The Isle of Man and Honduras announced they were looking into incorporating
blockchain based solutions into their own activities.

Blocksize Limit Increase Debate

Bitcoin was created without a limit to how many transactions could happen
simultaneously, but since it had small use this was no problem.
To prevent overload attacks Satoshi created a limit of 1MB so that nodes would
not be overwhelmed with data. At the time Bitcoin was small and the amount of
data in a block was far less than 1MB.
To the concern we would one day hit the max size, Satoshi suggested, ...
if (blocknumber > 115000)
maxblocksize = largerlimit

The community accepted the idea that when the block limit was hit the limit would
be raised.

No Solutions Implemented
Despite knowledge of the impending problem no action was taken by those with commit
access to the Bitcoin client Core.
SNs initial idea was never investigated further before he disappeared. The idea itself isnt
very resistant to manipulation by miners who want to make the block size very big. But any
miner who made the block sizes too big threatens to hurt the system and hence their own
holdings.
In Spring 2015 Gavin Andresen, to whom Satoshi handed over control of the Bitcoin
codebase when he disappeared, made a posting stating that we were going to hit the block
limit in roughly one year.
With the exception of a very few vocal people, including the Core client code contributor
Luke Dashjr, everyone agreed the block size should be raised but no one could agree on
how.

Solutions Proposed
Of the suggested solutions a few were made into BIPs.
BIP-100 by Jeff Garzik, a scheme where miners vote which modifies the block
limit size. The community didnt like giving miners more power.
BIP-101 by Gavin Andresen, has an immediate raise to 8MB and a doubling every
two years until the max block size is 8GBs. Some felt it was too aggressive.
BIP-102 by Jeff Garzik, increases the limit to 2MB as a stopgap measure.
BIP-103 by Pieter Wuille, increases the max block size to 1.04 Mb in 2017 and
then at 17.7% until the max block size is 2MB. Considered too conservative.

Bitcoin Codebase Forked to Create New Client

Months of inactivity by the core client dev team on making any decisions on how
to move forward followed Gavins post warning of network congestion.
In August 2015 Gavin and Mike Hern released client called BitcoinXT that would
utilize BIP 101. This client would function normally, once it gained a supermajority
of the hashpower and after January 2016 it would enable blocks up to 2MB to be
mined.
The code was released with two versions, one with BIP 101 being the only
change, another with some additional patches.
The news was released to the community and the feedback was very positive. At
first.

Censorship at /r/Bitcoin and bitcointalk.org

Shortly after the announcements regarding the new client users found the posts
removed.
It turned out that the head moderator of the subreddit reddit.com/r/Bitcoin and also
co-owner of the forum bitcointalk.org had a personal opinion that BitcoinXT was
not a real bitcoin software. He removed the initial posts on the subject and
removed a number of comments discussing it.
People who arrived on those website to discuss the news saw it was not posted,
and made a post about it. These posts were then removed. It soon became
apparent that the news was being censored and people began discussing that,
which resulted in those comments being removed and exacerbating the problem.

Top US Bitcoin Forum Disgraced

The moderators of /r/Bitcoin decided to teach a lesson by suddenly approving all
posts and flooding the subreddit with dozens of posts on the subject. This resulted
in others being upset their news feed was full of BitcoinXT posts.
The moderators changed the rules of the forum to prohibit discussion of ideas that
would split the Bitcoin blockchain.
The ability to fork the code if problems arose with the developers or code was
previously touted as a benefit of cryptos.
The head moderator said, If 90% of /r/Bitcoin users find these policies to be
intolerable, then I want these 90% of /r/Bitcoin users to leave.

Greek Economic Disruption

Greece owed money it couldnt pay back and the Greek economy descended into
a time of uncertainty. Banks did not open on a Monday with no plans to do so for a
week afterwards. Western Union and PayPal stopped serving people registered in
Greece and citizens feared their bank accounts would get haircuts by the
Government.
Many mainstream news outlets released stories saying that greeks were rushing
to bitcoin despite the evidence to the contrary.
Greeks continued to be limited in the amount of money they could move in and out
of the country.

Stress Test or Spam Attacks?

The idea of a stress test became popular in summer 2015, the Bitcoin network
was flooded with txs to see if it could handle it and presumably fix any part that
couldnt. The tests continued and the community began to view these events as
spam attacks.
The early events has many txs with low fees, but over time the tx fee rose to
where some normal txs were not getting confirmed in a timely manner. There were
at least 97,000 txs in the memory pool in July 2015.
Wallet providers responded by creating variable fee levels. Users can now provide
more fees if their tx needs rapid confirmation.

2015 News
The Bitcoin alert system was used when a scheduled update and a process
known as SPV mining led to some clients seeing falsely invalid blocks.
Visa and Mastercard stopped processing Backpage.com who then turned to btc.
Overstock.com announcd plans to issue $25 million worth of bonds using
OpenAssests colored coin protocol on top of Bitcoin through their 'cryptocurrency
initiative' Medici. The SEC approved these plans in December 2015.
Research that increases the fungibility and anonymity of btc txs increased.
Research into homomorphic encryption, confidential transactions, and
zero-knowledge proofs show promising results for computation in the future.

More 2015 News

The FBI released an educational statement on ransomware. These are programs that infect
computers or networks and encrypt all the files. The affected company can pay the attacker
to get their files back. For companies that dont keep their files backup or back them up on
the same network this can halt all business.
The website SourceForge began including malicious content in its downloads.
Processor BitPay announced they would pivot their business to focus on banks.
The code for the first sidechain, Elements, was released.
Replace By Fee (RBF) where a user broadcasts a second tx with a higher fee was released
as a way to help get txs into blocks faster, at the expense of the memorypool. Some argued
that if the maximum block size limit was raised the memepool would clear faster, and that the
fix for too many txs wasnt more txs.

Even More 2015 News

21co announced they would began to produce a Bitcoin Computer that was a
small computer with an ASIC built into it so that it could mine satoshis. The
satoshis could be used in computing such as the IoT.
The Canadian Senate released a report on Bitcoin urging regulators not to crush it
before it had a chance to grow.
Of the btc that were seized from silk road the remaining ~44,000 were auctioned.
Some people experienced a malleability attack from nodes, no btc were lost but
many were confused.

New OP codes, BIP 65 OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY allow txs not to be mined

until a specified date in the future.
BIP 68 Relative lock-time and BIP112 OP_CHECKSEQUENCEVERIFY will
enable Hashed Timelock Contracts and in theory should allow the lightning
network (LN) to attach to Bitcoin
BIP 9 Version Bits will allow multiple soft forks at once by using different sections
of the coinbase transaction.
There has been an increase in communication between Bitcoin users around the
world including those in China and the English speaking users.

Happy 7th Birthday, Best Performing Currency of 2015

January 2016 marks 7 years since Bitcoin began running.
Bitcoin was the best performing currency of 2015, based on the exchange rate
after the price roughly doubled in the last quarter of the year.
In January 2016 Bridges was re-arrested just a day before he was scheduled to
turn himself in at a Baltimore prison to begin his sentence.
He was found with at least his passport, cell phone, a computer with serial number
scratched off, documents relating to offshore businesses, and bulletproof vests
that are presumed stolen from the secret service.

Bitcoin Blocks Filling Up, Filling up

The number of txs continued to grow and the average size of blocks continued to
go up in sync; these txs may have been spam txs as some alledge or they may
have been due to increased use.
The average block size includes empty blocks that miners sometimes mine.
The core client code developers couldnt agree on any fix and much of the
community remained divided over lack of perceived action and censorship. After
some time the core client began to put more effort into community communication
to address concerns that they had been hostile to new developers.
Changes being made to the network will activate new OP codes that can enable
SegWit and the Lightning Network to connect to Bitcoin which may alleviate
congestion on the main chain.

Segregated Witness or SegWit

SegWit is a design change. It will fix a malleability problem and increase the
throughput of txs without changing the 1MB data cap.
Signatures are validated when they are broadcast but not when downloading the
blockchain as a new full node; in this sense they take up space that isnt being
used. This signature data is known as the witness.
The witness data is separated by creating a new Merkle tree of it and storing it in
the coinbase.
SegWit can be soft-forked so that nodes that dont upgrade can still create valid
blocks.

Lightning Network
The proposed LN will be similar to a hub and spoke style payment model; where
one central hub can connect with many other entities.
Bitcoins would become locked on the blockchain while a LN contract is set up, the
entities that created the contract could trade back and forth instantly until they
needed to settle. Many txs can take place before settling needs to happen.
Afterwards only one tx needs to be sent on the blockchain, saving UTXO space for
people who repeatedly interact with each other.
If any party stops responding or fails the terms of the contract it can be execute
after a time-out delay, giving them a chance to respond.

Craig Wright and Friends

By November 2015, a cache of information including emails was allegedly leaked
to several members of the media.
The purported correspondence indicated that Craig Wright among with some small
number of other individuals, including one Dave Kleiman were behind the secret
identity of Satoshi Nakamoto.
If the writings are to be believed, Wright was upset at never getting any
recognition for possibly being SN, Wright had mined early bitcoin on one of the
worlds best supercomputers named tulip, and that those btc cannot be moved on
chain until 2020.

Wright outted in December 2015

A month after the information had been leaked to media members, in early
December Wired and Gizmodo ran stories on it the information, stating Wright and
Kleiman were likely the creators of btc.
Evidence included blog posts by Wright indicate he knew of Bitcoin or a very
similar system before the white paper was released, but not before the prerelease.
Allegedly a blog of his mentioned Bitcoin would be launched the next day, only
hours before the client was publicly launched.
The leaked files contain more pointed information such as a PDF from Kleinman
about a tulip trust worth 1.1 million bitcoin, the upper bound for btcs mined by SN
from extranonce analysis.

Response to Initial Reveal

The community began digging into anything they could find and what they found
was not concrete proof.
No one knew for sure the tulip computer was real or where it was.
He education credentials were found to not be accurate.
Some of the leaked blog posts and documents appear to have been backdated.
The Australian Tax Office or ATO raided Wrights home the next day.
His claim was largely seen as an elaborate hoax (at least 20 months in the
making), however it still seemed to have hints Wright could really be SN.

Craig Wright, Part II

On May 2nd 2016 articles published in the Economist, BBC, and GQ covered
Wright stating his declaration of being SN.
Blog posts by Gavin Andresen, Ian Grigg, and Jon Matonis shortly after declared
their similar opinions on the matter. Gavin had travelled to London and meet with
him.
Wright posted a blog post about validating signatures but never provided a valid
signature for checking and included a screenshot of computer code.
The community declared that this was not proof and demanded actual proof to
validate Craigs claims. Wright said he would soon publish more proof.

End of Act II
Only a few days later Wright made a blog post stating he would not publish further
evidence and that he would again, disappear from public view. In his own words,
he was not strong enough. Sorry and goodbye.
Many of his other online blog posts and accounts were scrubbed.
It came to light that his goodbye blog post came shortly after his team failed to
perform further cryptographic proof for the BBC and some technical experts.
Craig has indicated that he may be able to move some coins come the last quarter
of 2016. In the meantime most believe Wright is an elaborate hoaxer while some
that have come out to state their belief of Wright being SN have not expanded on
their interaction with Wright nor rescinded their statements of belief.

Extra oddities of the Craig Wright story

Wright may have taken a multimillion dollar loan on the basis of him having millions of dollars in
Bitcoin to back the loan.
Wright stated he wanted to avoid the public eye but he hired a whole team who had been working
for months, even getting professional photographs taken.
By showing he is Satoshi he may be legally able to sue Kleinmans next of kin for any encrypted
Bitcoin.
A Uyen T Nguyen who was added to W&K (a company founded by Wright and Kleiman) in 2014
and in 2016 tweeted "Prepare for dec" & "We formed Prometheus"
Wright and his firm gave unfettered access to a British joournalist weeks in advance of his reveal.
This writer alleges Wright fled to avoid potential persecution after preparing to set up a company
with many Bitcoin related patents and sell it.

before any LN can be fully built.

A Decentralized Autonomous Organization, the DAO

From doahub.org DAOs will be at the center of many economies going forward and intend to be at the
forefront of supporting innovative and promising projects, products and services in order to become 'The
DAO': A flexible decentralized autonomous organization leveraging the wisdom of the crowds to benefit
the DAO Token Holders.
The DAO was intended to automatically execute contracts on the Ethereum blockchain.
It was intended to be used to invest in businesses and ideas and started in April 2016.
In June 2016 the smart contracts in the DAO were used to exploit the spirit of the endevious and millions
of ether tokens were taken from investors.
The community faced a tough decision to fork the codebase and try and recover their coins or to preserve
the integrity of the blockchain and lose the coins.

July 9, 2016: The Second Halving Day

The 2nd of 34 halvings, in which the number of new coins created per block
becomes halved happened on July 9th with block 420,000.
Halvings occur every 210,000 blocks which is about four years. As the hashpower
of the system goes up blocks are found faster and faster. The retargeting of the
target difficulty takes the average hashpower used in the last 2016 blocks (about
two weeks) and makes it so blocks would take 10 minutes to find if the hashpower
didnt increase. ons and even bets on this.
The coinbase reward miners get for finding a block will decrease by 50% from 25
btc to 12.5 btc.
