Course description
Honors World Civilizations will take an in depth
study of ancient cultures and their relation to
contemporary society. Specifically, we will
examine civilizations from Africa, Asia, Europe,
India, and the Middle East, determining their
significance and lasting effects on society today.
Using the ISSN model of global competency be
prepared to think critically in this course by
making connections to today's world and your
own way of life.

Course Objectives
Scholars will improve ability to critically analyze
multiple perspectives, and investigate the world
connecting how early humans influence the
societies and civilization of today.
Scholars are able to synthesize information and
make meaningful modern day connections.
Scholars leave the class with an ability to
communicate ideas through taking positions in
analytical practice and working collaboratively, as
well as take action by working on debates, mock
trials, and drafting proposals.

How to Succeed in this Class:


Participate - Class participation and class work is
critical to success in this class. Absences and
tardies will negatively impact a students grade.
Students who come everyday, on time, and are
part of class discussion will do well in the class.
Take Responsibility for Missed Work
Class homework and agenda will be posted on
the website.
When you miss a quiz or test, schedule a time to
make it up.
Keep Track of Grades: Check your grades on
Infinite Campus
(www2.portlandschools.org/students) to make
sure your work is turned in. Some low grades can
be improved. Check with me.

Policies
All work that is appropriately completed on time
will begin at its full point value. Late assignments
will be subject to a 10% grade deduction per
working day the assignment is turned in late. Work
that is not turned in will be a 60. The penalty will be
waived for extenuating circumstances such as
student absence or other circumstances as judged

Be honest. I will treat you like young adults, own

actions. I will be much more understanding if you
do this. I follow the district academic policy. All
work is your own. Academic dishonesty will result
in loss of credit for assignment, and principal

Class participation is 6%
Final Exam is 10%

Homework
Homework is assigned 3-4 times a week. Most of
the time you will be given time in class to begin
the work, and it should be mostly done by the
end of WINN.

for class.
Keep electronics and cell phones are
closed and away until instructed to use
them for class purposes.
- Have fun and learn. This class is an honors level
course. Meaning there is a lot of work, but the
goal is to learn. This course has a lot of new and
exciting opportunities, and you will be treated as
an eager, young adult learner. Rise to the
challenge and enjoy the experience!
