Class Theme: TRAIN your brain!

Take Ownership: We will own our education and our lives by taking responsibility for our learning,
doing our work, seeking help when we do not understand a concept, and working relentlessly to reach
our personal goals.
Reason abstractly and Quantitatively: We will create understandable representations of problem
situations and use properties of operations.
Attend to Precision: We will be precise when solving problems and clear when we share our ideas.
Proper math vocabulary is the key for this!
Intelligence is gained through hard work: We understand that we can be as good at math as we want to
be. We will train our brains until we are excellent mathematicians.
Never give up: We will persevere in solving problems.

Vision: Mathematics is a subject many students say they are simply bad at. Ms. Pattersons students will
understand the opposite, that intelligence especially mathematical intelligence is not something they are
either born with or without. They will also understand that mathematics is something all of them can be great at
if they put in hard work. As young mathematicians, Ms. Pattersons students will think of the brain as a muscle
that they will train relentlessly in order to expand their mathematical knowledge and skill. The perseverance,
computational competence, and analytical skills they gain during this training will benefit them for the rest of
their lives.

You are expected to bring the following materials to class every day:

Pencil and paper

Three-prong folder with pockets
Interactive Journal (must be a spiral notebook)

Grading Policy

40%
Regular Assignments (classwork, in-class projects, journal assignments, warm-ups and
most exit tickets)
30%
Quizzes (unit quizzes, some exit tickets)
20%
Tests
10%
Home Learning (mostly MathXL online)

Home Learning
Home learning is very important when learning mathematics, because it allows you to practice. Repeated
failure to complete homework on time may result in a detention.
Home learning may be turned in late, but you will receive 10 points off for every day that your home
learning assignment is late. For example, if you turn your home learning assignment in on Tuesday instead of
Monday you will receive ten points off for that home learning assignment.

Make-up Work
If you are absent for any reason, you are expected to make up your assignments. Generally, you will be given
up to one day from the day you return to make up that assignment. For example, if you are out of school on
Monday and return to my class on Tuesday, you have until Wednesday to make up your work.
Check my website www.mspattersonalg1.weebly.com for the assignments and notes that you missed while
absent.
Quizzes and tests may be made up after school. You may also be allowed to make them up before school if your
guardians cannot pick you up after school. However, you must first inform me that you will be coming to school
early or staying at school late.
Tutoring
You are enrolled in my Algebra 1a course and my Algebra 1 Enrichment (Intensive Math) course. Therefore,
you will take math with me every single school day and tutoring will only be offered on an as-needed basis.
Please inform me if you would like to stay after school for tutoring, and I will do my best to assist you on the
day you select.
