A) Briefly explain what the images above tell us about how pre Columbian
Americans interacted with their environment?
Maize was a central part of Pre-Columbian culture, society, economics, and government. So
important was this staple crop to these societies that some cultures had deities tied to Maize (Image
on the right). Maize cultivation also shows us that these cultures were moving away from
hunting/gathering, and moving towards sustained agriculture. Sustained agriculture also tells us that
these societies were adapting to their physical environments.

Advanced Societies and Civilization

In Pre-Columbian America many advanced societies existed (Maya, Aztec). One thing that advanced
societies need to flourish are sustainable food sources. Many cultures, like the Mayans and Aztecs,
successfully cultivated Maize. This allowed them to both grow in population and increase in
specialization: freeing up labor (hunting / gathering) for other areas (government, military,
engineering/building, etc.)
