Fund Set Up at Woodmont to Help Victims of

Flooding in LA Through Week of Compassion
Louisiana flood victims lost almost everything in one of
the states worst natural disasters.
The heavy rainfall that started Aug. 12 inundated South
Louisiana with two feet of rain in just a couple of days.
Widely considered as the worst natural calamity since
Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the historic flooding killed
13 and ravaged more than 60,000 homes.

Chris Cox Accepts Youth Minister Position

Since Treys departure in May
to Indianapolis, Woodmont has
been searching for our next
Associate Minister for Youth and
their families. Marcus Crider and
I chaired a strong committee
this summer and we enlisted the
help of Mark Devries of Ministry
Architects to help us.
The
following individuals served on
the committee with me: Marcus Crider, Mark Devries,
Katie Gossage, Nicole Clayton, Terri McConnell, Dan
Hartle, Meredith Hollomon, Mart Sesler, Laura Dovan,
Darden Copeland, and Pam Richardson. The committee
also included four of our youth Macy Walker, Will Elliot,
Taylor Glascock, and Justine Sitton. We are now happy to
report that we have extended a call to Chris Cox and he
has accepted.
Chris currently lives just outside of Spartanburg,
South Carolina. He is the son of a minister and is a part
of the Cooperative Baptist denomination (very similar to
Disciples of Christ). Chris attended Furman University for
college and received his Master of Divinity at GardnerWebb Divinity School with a concentration in Christian
education. He finished his M.Div. in 2014. Chris has
extensive experience working with youth at Seesalt
Camp, a camp/ministry his father Bill started many
years ago. The camp welcomes hundreds of youth each
summer. He has also been freelance writer for Smyth
and Helwys where he has been writing youth curriculum
to be used within his denomination. Chris is married to
E.A. (who is from Nashville) and together they have two
children Jim (6) and Liam (3). Their dog is Obadiah, yes
named after the minor OT prophet. Not only was the
search committee impressed with Chris youth ministry
experience but also with his passion for teaching and
building relationships with the youth themselves. He has
a deep love for teenagers and the many challenges they
face at this juncture of life.

by Clay Stauffer

We felt very welcomed. The youth group really seems to

be in a good place and I have a lot of respect for what has
been going on there. From what I observed, it seems like
the students enjoy being challenged and stretched. They
want to engage the issues in the world and in their faith.
That excites me because its where I try to live. He also
said this about his family; We love Nashville. The area
has so much to offer. We are excited about the possibility
of living near E.A.s family. The idea that our boys could
potentially be a part of such a vibrant childrens ministry
that would help grow their faith is wonderful!
Chris will begin at Woodmont on Sunday, September
11th. The first few months will be challenging as E.A. and
the boys will remain in South Carolina this fall because of
school. E.A. teaches Spanish at a local high school and
Jim is now in the first grade. The plan will be for them
to move to Nashville officially at Christmas time. In the
mean-time there will be some back and forth but Chris is
excited to begin his ministry at Woodmont!
We are excited to welcome Chris on board and we
look forward to the many great things he is going to do
for our church and our youth program. He will make
a tremendous addition to our staff team. You can visit
Chris blog at www.wilcomoore.com or send him an
email at wccox@icloud.com.
Blessings,

After he graduated from divinity school, Chris took the

time to discern Gods call for his ministry. He wanted to
make sure that the church is where he feels called to be.
He now knows that God is calling him to be in the church,
working with youth and their families, and is looking
forward to being a part of the Woodmont family and to
working with Katie Gossage. He has been teaching and
preaching some at his home church in South Carolina,
and enjoys reading, writing, running, and spending
time with his family. Chris and his family were here at
Woodmont for Homecoming Sunday (August 14th). He
got to teach youth Sunday School as well as see what a
Sunday morning looks like. He shared these words with
me after the fact: E.A. and I both really loved the church.

CONUNDRUM
Conundrum - I have
always been fascinated with
that word since I first heard it a
few years ago. Id never heard
it before, and now you hear it
uttered quite often especially
by the talking heads. What
does it mean? Here are two
definitions:

Consumer confidence dropped sharply in

September. People must be starting to worry that
one of these candidates George Bush or Michael
Dukakis is actually going to win. (Newsweek,
Nov. 7, 1988)
After a steadily thickening diet of mud and factfudging, Americans were muttering oaths about a
pox on both political houses, openly wishing they
had other candidates than Michael Dukakis and
George Bush to choose between. (U.S. News and
World Report, Nov 7, 1988)

- A confusing and difficult problem or question

- A question asked for amusement, typically a riddle
In light of both those definitions, this 2016 Presidential
election is a conundrum. I dont have to tell you why. You
know. Like me, youve heard about it ad nauseam. They
say, never before have two candidates had such negative
ratings, no trust, and you cant believe them Ive heard
this election campaign described as the most toxic ever.
But is this true? If you study American Presidential
campaigns, you find that weve been here before, many
times in fact, going back to the first Presidents. Some say
the dirtiest, ugliest Presidential campaigns were:
1800 John Adams vs Thomas Jefferson
1828 Andrew Jackson vs John Quincy Adams
(most say this one was the worst)
1860 Abraham Lincoln vs Stephen Douglas
1889 Grover Cleveland vs James Blaine
1928 Herbert Hoover vs Al Smith
1968 Lyndon Johnson vs Barry Goldwater
Read about them, and you will see that this 2016
campaign is not even close.
The only time I preached a sermon prior to a
Presidential election was in 1988 when George H.W. Bush
ran against Michael Dukakis. Here are some of the things
said about that campaign:

by Dr. C. Roy Stauffer

Newsweek said, Couldnt we just call the whole

thing off and start over?
A Cleveland citizen wrote, I am embarrassed,
ashamed and very angry. These four candidates
have shown us that they have no business in politics
since they are still in the sandbox.
Some said that 1988 campaign was the most dismal
of all, and predicted the lowest voter turnout ever.
So, how does all this make you feel about what were
facing this year? I still remember and appreciate what
Vanderbilt Political Science Professor, Dr. John Geer,
said here at Woodmont when he spoke at a Wednesday
night dinner last Spring. He said something to the effect
that as he has watched and studied (and written about)
Presidential elections over the years, that he just views
them as entertainment. Candidates say whatever they
need to say to get elected. Dr. Geer is coming back on
Wednesday, October 5th, just before the election itself.
Again, I will look forward to his observations.
By the way, the title of that sermon I preached before
the 1988 election was Will Your Faith Influence Your Vote?
And so Ill leave you with the same question this year.
