A. Maximum tangential Stress (MTS) criterion
According to this fracture criterion the fracture occur in the radial direction where
the tangential stress is maximum on the circle of finite radius from crack tip. The
fracture occurs when the maximum tangential stress ()max reaches a critical
value.

In the case of generalizes plain stress where material contain the straight crack ,
the stresses near the crack are given by
