Coursedescription

Thecourseisdesignedtoexposestudentstoliteratureandthedifferent
approachestowritingsuchasexpository,persuasive,andanalytical.
Studentswillread,discuss,analyze,andengageinmeaningful
constructionthroughthemeansofnovels,shortstories,poetry,plays,
articles,speeches,anddifferenttypesofessays.Studentswillalsogaina
basicunderstandingofgrammarconventions.

Courseobjectives
Thecourseisdesignedtohelpstudentsachieveprogress,createlifelong
independentreaders,increasereadingandcomprehensionskills,and
prepareforthedemandsoftheStateofTexasAssessmentofAcademic
Readiness(STAAR).

Thefollowingexpectationswillbeestablishedtocreateapositiveand
productivelearningenvironment.

Beanactiveparticipantintheteaching/learningprocess.

Grading
Gradingiscomposedofthefollowing:
*45%Dailywork(journals,notes,dailyassignments)
*45%Formativeassessments(test,quizzes,essays)
*10%Summative(6wkstest,benchmarks,semesterexams,major
projects)

MakeUpPolicy
Studentswhoareabsentwillbegiventheopportunitytomakeupwork
forfullcredit.Uponreturningtoschool,studentswillbegiven(3)days
inwhichworkwillbeacceptedforfullcredit.ItistheSTUDENT'S
RESPONSIBILITYtoaskorcheckformissingassignmentsandcollect
relevantmaterialsfromtheteacher.Itisalsorecommendedforthe
studenttofrequentlycheckourFreshmanwebsite.

LateWorkPolicy
10pts.willbedeductedforeverydaytheassignmentislate.

Workfrom
thefirstthreeweekswillnotbeacceptedafterprogressreportshavebeen
sentout.ProjectswillNOTbeacceptedafterthethirddayfromthedue
date.

ReTestPolicy

Studentswhohavefailedatestwillberesponsibletoscheduleatime

beforeorafterschooltoretakeanexam.Studentswillhaveonlythree

daysfromwhentestsarehandedbacktoretaketheexam.Afterthree

days,anexamcannotbemadeup.

Restroom/OtherRequests
Restroomusewillbelimited(3peopleperperiod).YouwillNOT
beallowedtousetherestroomfacilitiesthefirst15minutesorthe
last15minutesofclass.Therewillbeanassignedhallpasstobe
usedonlyinanemergencyandwillbedocumented.
Youwillhave6restroompassespersixweeks.Studentsnotusing
theirpasswillbeawardedextrapointsontheirendofsixweeksexam.

ExtraCredit
Supplies:
Studentswillbeallowedtobringinthefollowingunopened

collegeruledpaper.Thesesupplieswillonlyreplaceonedaily

willonlybeallowedtobeaddedtodailygrades.

NewsArticle:
Studentswillbeallowedtobringanewspaperarticle(politicalor
worldnews)topresenttotheclasseachFriday.Theymustprovide
abriefsummary,ananswertoanopenendedquestion,andbeable
toansweranystudent/teacherquestionstoreceivecredit.Students
willonlybeabletopresentatotalof6articlesforamaximum
of30ptsthatwillappliedtotheirlowesttestgrade.
