CHAPTERIII

RESEARCHMETHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the researcher presents the research method, the research
settings, the research participants, the research instruments, the data gathering
techniques, the data analysis techniques, and the research procedure.

A. Research Method
This research used a mixed method, which is a combination of a quantitative
research method and a qualitative research method. According to Babbie, Earl R
(2010), quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,
mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires,
and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational
techniques. By using quantitative methods, the research should focuses on gathering
numerical data and simplifying it across groups of people or to explain a particular
phenomenon. Babbie states that the characteristics of quantitative methods are:
Data is usually gathered using structured research instruments.
The results are based on larger sample sizes that are representative of the
population.
The research study can usually be replicated or repeated, given its high
reliability.

Researcher has a clearly defined research question to which objective

answers are sought.
All aspects of the study are carefully designed before data is collected.
Data are in the form of numbers and statistics, often arranged in tables,
charts, figures, or other non-textual forms.
Moreover, qualitative research does not introduce treatments or manipulate
variables, or impose the researcher's operational definitions of variables on the
participants. Rather, it lets the answer appear from the participants. It is more flexible
in that it can adjust to the setting. Concepts, data collection tools, and data collection
methods can be adjusted as the research progresses. Qualitative research aims to get a
better understanding through first hand experience, truthful reporting, and quotations
of actual conversations. It aims to understand how the participants derive meaning
from their surroundings, and how their meaning influences their behavior. It also uses
observation as the data collection method. Observation is the selection and recording
of behaviors of people in their environment. (Germain, Saint. "research method."PPA

This research will use qualitative research because the researchers want to
know the amount of students with low frequency communication with their parents.
This research will also be considered a quantitative research because the researchers
would also want to know the impacts towards the students lives in the long run.

B. Research Setting
This research will be done within the confines of Santa Laurensia High
School, done before the second semester ends.

C. Research Participants
This research will use 31 students from grade 10 Social class and 31 parents
of Social class as the subject. We need 31 subjects in each case because there are a
total of 60 students in grade 10 social class, therefore to get an accurate data, we need
50%+1 subject to have majority data. The researcher has also taken into consideration
that through behavioral observation, social classes in Santa Laurensia high school
tend to socialize more than students in science classes. This also prompts the
researchers to use the students parents as subjects as well, so that the conclusion will
not be one sided.

D. Instruments and Data Gathering Technique

This research will be using questionnaires to survey the parents and students.
Each questionnaire contains approximately 4-6 questions regarding the amount of the
time they spend communication with each other.
1. Survey questionnaire to find out data about how many students have low

frequency of communication and how the low frequency of communication is

in relation with their social life
2. Survey 2 quizlet to parents via email
3. Interview interviewing experts

E. Data Analysis Technique

Questionnaires will be taken as quantitative data, whereas the interview will
be taken as qualitative data. The data from questionnaires would then be compiled
based on questions to form a pie chart to better understand the percentage of majority
cases. The qualitative data would not be put into charts, but to be used as supporting
evidence towards the pie charts.

F. Research Procedure
In this research, the researchers will survey students from grade 10 social
classes, by giving out questionnaires to 31 students. In these questionnaires, we will
also ask them to fill out the email address of their parents, to help set the ground base
for the second step. We would also ask the cooperation of the students to ask their
parents to check their emails. After gaining the emails of parents, we will then
proceed to send a second set of questions, directed at the parents. Those questions
along with their answers would then be sent back to us via email. Along the process
of doing the survey, we would also interview an expert psychologist to help support

our data. After all the data has been taken, we will put all the quantitative data into pie
charts. This will help us see the majority of answers towards our questions. The
results of the interview with the expert would be used to help explain the behavior of
both students and parents.
