SECTION 4.0 : REPORT


4.1

Information to be Submitted

4.1.1

General Information for all Exploratory Holes.


The following general information where appropriate shall be submitted on record sheets of all
Exploratory Holes, in daily journals, preliminary records and the Final Report.

Contract Title and Reference Number.


Contractors Name.
Exploratory Hole, reference number, location (coordinates, chainage, offset) and
diameter or size.
Dates of exploration referred to the depth at the end of each working day or shift.
Groundwater levels at the end of each working day or shift.
Equipment used.
Details of services or drains location.
Data on the stability of the Exploratory Hole and details of casing/stabilising
agent/shoring used related to progress.

Specific Information for the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) carried out in Boreholes.
The specific information for the Standard Penetration Test shall be submitted as follows :1.

Number of blows of each 75 mm penetration.


The penetration resistance N value, including the initial 150 mm seating
penetration.
For high blow counts, the penetration for a fixed number of blow counts as required
in the Specification for the Standard Penetration Test.
Boring method, size, depth of borehole and depth of casing (daily journal only).
Information on water added (daily journal only).
Depth to water inside casing if water added to stabilise borehole.

Specific Information for the Field Shear Vane Test


The specific information for the field shear vane test carried out in a borehole shall be submitted
as follows :1. Gauge readings taken at the intervals stipulated in the Specification for the field vane
test in borehole.
2. Peak and remoulded vane shear strengths in kPa expressed to two significant figures,
sensitivity values to be included.
3. Type of vane test apparatus and calibration information for torque head.
4. Dimensions of vane.
5. Date and depth of test, borehole reference number.
6. Information on water in borehole (daily journal only).
7. Depth of casing at time of shear vane test.

4.1.4

Specific Information for Borehole Permeability Test


The specific information for the borehole permeability test shall be submitted as follows :1.

Level of water at start and end of test.


Level of water at specified time intervals during test (daily journal only).
Plot of head of water divided by initial head of water (log scale) against time.
Value of coefficient of permeability of material tested reported in m/sec together with
calculations (preliminary records and final report only).
Date of test, borehole reference number, ground reduced level.
Description of stratum tested.
Ground water table before test.

8. Depth to base of casing and base of borehole.

Additional Information for Cone Penetration Test (Mechanical)


In addition to the general information required under Clause 2.3.4 the following information for
the cone penetration test (mechanical) shall be submitted :1.

Type of cone, rate of penetration, jacking capacity and maximum reaction of jacking
equipment.
Reference numbers of load cells used and detailed of calibration as required in the
Specification for cone penetration test (mechanical).
Tabulated test results of the measured resistance values consisting of the cone
resistance, local friction and friction ratio (defined as the ratio of local friction to
cone resistance measured at the same depth and expressed as percentage).
Graphical plots of measured parameters as follows :(preliminary records and final reports)
cone resitance to scale of 10 mm = 0.2 MPa.
local friction to scale of 10 mm = 10 kPa
friction ratio (defined as ratio of local friction to cone resistance measured
at the same depth and expressed as a percentage) to scale of 10 mm = 2%.
scale for plotting depth shall be 10 mm = 1 m.
The recorded test results shall be provided to the Employer on standard floppy discs
or similar approved medium using a software system and format to be agreed with
the Employer.

Additional Information for Cone Penetration Test with Pore-Water Pressure Measurement
(Piezocone)
In addition to the general information required under Clause 2.3.5 the following information for
piezocone test shall be submitted :1.

Equipment used including type of piezocone, filter type, saturation fluid, reference
number of piezocone, jacking capacity, maximum reaction available, details of
recording equipment.
Rate of penetration and verticality.
Test results consisting of tabulation of cone resistance, local friction, friction ratio,
pore pressure and inclination.
The digitally recorded results shall also be provided to the Employer on a standard
floppy disk or similar approved medium using software system and format to be
agreed with the Employer.
Graphical plots of measured parameters shall be presented as follows : cone resistance plotted to scale of 10 mm = 0.2 MPa.
local friction plotted to scale of 10 mm = 10 kPa.
friction ratio (defined as ratio of local friction to cone resistance measured
at the same depth expressed as a percentage) plotted to scale of 10 mm =
2%.
pore pressure plotted to scale of 10 mm = 50 kPa.
the scale for plotting depth shall be 10 mm = 1 m.
for dissipation tests pore pressure tabulated and plotted against time.
for tabulations the measured values shall be given at interval of 100 mm.
The following graphical plots shall be presented based upon parameters and in a
format approved by the Employer.
a) corrected cone resistance (qt) for excess water pressure above hydrostatic
pressure vs depth.
b) excess water pressure ( - o) vs depth.
c) water pressure ratio(Bq) vs depth.
d) cone resistance ratio (Aq) vs depth.

The tabulated and plotted results shall be prepared from the recording data to the
resolution given in the Specification for the piezocone test. The use of graphical plots
to prepare the preliminary records shall not be permitted. The scales quoted above
may be altered by the Employer depending on the actual conditions encountered.

Additional Information for Penetration Field Shear Vane Test


In addition to the general information required under Clause 2.3.9 and the specific information on
shear vane tests conducted in boreholes as described in Clause 2.3.2, the following additional
information for penetration field shear vane tests shall be submitted :1.

Calculated values of peak and remoulded vane shear strength tabulated and plotted
as a profile against depth below ground level.
Scales for plotting shall be :
vane shear strength 10 mm = 10 kPa.
depth 10 mm = 1 m.
Peak and remoulded shear strength shall be differentiated by the use of different
symbols clearly plotted and joined by fine straight lines.

Additional Information for JKR / Mackintosh Probes


In addition to the general information required under Clause 2.3.10, the following information for
JKR / Mackintosh shall be submitted :1.

Type of probe used, weight of hammer, height of drop.


Tabulation of number of blows for every 300 mm of penetration.
Graphical plots of numbers of blows for every 300 mm of penetration using a scale
for plotting depth of 10 mm = 1 m.
The test results consisting of number of blows for every 300 mm of penetration
versus depth shall provided to the Employer on standard floppy disks or similar
approved medium using a software system and format to be agreed with the
Employer.

Additional Information for Pressuremeter Tests


In addition to the general information required under Clause 2.3.8, the following additional
information for pressuremeter tests shall be submitted :1.

Equipment used including type of pressuremeter, reference number of pressuremeter


details of recording equipment, relevant aspects of manufacturers specification,
details of drilling equipment and methods and all necessary calibrations.
Tabulation and graphical plots of test results comprising the effective pressures and
average percentage cavity strain of the measuring cell at intervals of strain for the
loading-unloaded-reload and final unloading stages of the tests; and effective
pressures at intervals of cavity strain for each strain arm as agreed with the
Employer.
An assessment of the insitu total lateral stress.
The shear modulus derived from the unload-reload section of the test. The change in
percentage cavity strain during unload-reload loop shall also reported.
The derived undrained shear strength.
Limit pressure.
Details of the methods and constants used in the calculations.

4.2

Daily Journals
The Contractor shall prepare for each Exploratory Hole and Insitu field test, a daily Journal which
shall be of a form to be approved by the Employer. The Journals for each Exploratory Hole and
insitu field test shall be submitted to the Employer at the beginning of the next working day
following the day to which they refer. The journal shall contain the information required in Clause
4.1 where relevant.

4.3

Preliminary Records of Exploratory Holesand Field Test


The Contractor shall prepare preliminary records which shall be submitted to the Employer in
duplicate within 2 working days of the completion of each Exploratory Hole, and insitu field tests
to which they refer and shall contain the information required in Clause 4.1 where relevant.

4.4

Preliminary Laboratory Test Results


Preliminary Laboratory Test Results shall be submitted in duplicate to the Employer in batches at
the completion of each weeks testing. The information to be submitted shall be as required by the
relevant specific standard. In addition a single copy of each laboratory test result sheet shall be
submitted together with any calculations carried out.

4.5

Final Report
The Final Report shall consist of a factual report on the Soils Investigation carried out for the
project. The Report shall be bound in loose leafed hard backed multiple ring binders with not more
than 50mm thickness of pages in each volume, or as otherwise directed by the Employer. The
cover of the report shall highlight the Employer, the title of the project, the contractor and the
duration dates of the field works (in that order). The Final Report shall contain the following
information :

A brief factual description of the works, stating the aim and scope of the Works, the
numbers and types of Exploratory Holes, Soundings and field tests, duration and
time of year, weather conditions encountered, a brief description of the Site
Operations and List of laboratory tests including testing standards used.
A brief description of equipment and procedures used for forming Exploratory holes,
Soundings and carrying out field tests.
Records of Exploratory Holes, Soundings and field test including all the information
required in Clause 4.1 where relevant. The records shall include all the information
presented in the preliminary records updated as necessary based on laboratory test
results and further examination of samples.
Standpipe and piezometer records, including relevant permeability test results.
All laboratory test records and results.
Summary sheets of all test results.
Site plans showing locations of all Exploratory Holes, Soundings and areas covered
by the Soils Investigation, including the Scale and North sign.
All soil description presented shall take into account laboratory test results strictly in
accordance with BS 5930 : 1981.

Approval of Final Report


A draft copy of the Final Report shall be submitted to the Employer for approval before
submission of the Final Report.
The Contractor shall allow two (2) weeks in his Programme for the Employer to grant this
approval and he shall include amendments, if any, as required by the Employer, in the Final
Report. The number of copies of the Final Report to be submitted shall be in accordance with the
Bill of Quantities.
