Welcome to Strategic Reading!! It is exciting to have all of you in my class. During this
semester, you will be working hard to strengthen your literacy skills. This class will also be used
to supplement your English 10 class. By the end of the semester, you will improve your reading,
spelling, writing, and comprehension skills. Supporting your literacy skills in other classes is the
core of the class; however, incorporated into the schedule is other literature. I look forward to a
great semester with all of you.
Required Supplies
You must obtain the following materials as soon as possible:
Pencils
Paper
Pen (optional)
2 Highlighters
Composition book
Reading
Students in this course will:
Read self-selected books and teacher assigned books. You are responsible for
choice books and they need to be appropriate for class discussion. In addition, I
have the right to refuse the book if it is not appropriate.
Learn how to read in a variety of ways (e.g., surface, close, critical).
Develop strategies to read different types of texts: stories, poems, essays, texts,
textbooks, graphics, websites, and images.
Read for a variety of purposes (e.g., academic, personal, informational).
Study and learn to monitor your reading processes.
Improve your reading speed, fluency, comprehension, stamina, and confidence.
Increase decoding and encoding skills
Academic Literacy
Students in this course will:

Use school organizers to track assignments and due dates.

Manage time to ensure you have fun and succeed in school.

Participate in classes in ways that improve your standing and show respect**.

Ask for and accept help when you do not understand how to do an
assignment.

Determine which ideas and information matter most when reading or viewing.

Increase decoding and encoding skills.

Cell Phones
Cell phones will be put into the bin when class starts . Before class ends, students will
pick up their cell phones. Students who dont put phones in bins and have it out in class
without permission will have their phone taken away until after school when they may
pick it up. At the second infraction, phones will be given to administration.
Writing
Students in this course will:
Write coherent, thoughtful explanations of or responses to what they read.
Learn how to assess and improve their own writing.
Generate their own writing topics and questions to help them write.
Research subjects of personal interest.
Speaking
Students in this course will:
Participate in class and group discussion about what they read and think.
Learn how to ask for help in ways that get positive responses and useful
information.
Learn and use appropriate academic vocabulary to discuss ideas and texts.

Attendance
All school/district attendance policies regarding absences and tardies apply to
this class.

Food
No food or drinks allowed in this classroom (water is accepted).

Seating
Seating is assigned according to the alphabet and an individuals learning needs.

Your grade is based on your performance and improvement in these areas:

A = 100-90%
F = 59%-below

B = 89-80%

C = 79-70%

D = 69-60%

I am available before, during, and after school; in addition, I am usually in C114 during
Block 3,4 and 5
