Course Description

Through reading, writing, and speaking, you will learn to understand, explain, and analyze. You will prepare
for college and your life beyond by learning the power of language and literature. Additionally, you will
prepare for the FSA, SAT and the ACT through reading and writing.

ensure they are being understood

2. written warning/parent notification

3. parent conference
4. referral to the Assistant Principal/parent notification

Grading Scale:
My class runs on a point system. Everything you do in class will be turned in for a gradeclasswork often
ranges from 20-50 points depending on the difficulty and length and a bell-ringer each day will count for
10 points. Classwork is due at the end of each class, but can, more often than not, be completed as
homework and turned in first-thing the following class period.
One exception to that rule is in-class writing and tests, which will be due when time is called to better
prepare for state testing. Writings and tests will all be worth 100 points.
Achieve3000 will be used every dayyou will have 3 class periods to complete each article and each day
will earn you 20 points.
Participation makes up the last portion of your grade in my class. If you are on-task, present, and
attempting to understand and contribute to classroom discussion a majority of the time, you will do well in
this section and in my class as a whole!
This scale might fluctuate throughout the year depending on focus of the unit.

Late Work:

In-class work should be completed when assigned, unless specified otherwise or more time is requested.
Essays and projects will have specific due dates, and if the assignment is late an appropriate deduction will
be determined. Final due date for each marking period will be posted at the beginning of each marking
period. Work will not be accepted past this date.
Make-Up Work
If you are absent for any reason, it is your responsibility to find out what work needs to be completed.
Students have one day to make up the work for each day absent (i.e. 3 days absent = 3 days to make up
work). If you miss a test, see me ASAP to set up a time to make it up during the following Tutoring/Office
hours. Work will be updated on my website ladsona.weebly.com. Students should keep up with missing and
make-up work daily.
TUTORING, SAFETY NETS, AND CONTACT INFORMATION:
Tutoring is available in room 110 on Tuesdays 2:00-5:15. Other after school dates may be available upon
request and with advance notice. NOTE: The activity bus does not arrive until 5:15.
SAFETY NETS include such activities as in-class remediation and enrichment through small group work,
assignment recovery (request process necessary), revising essays that do not meet the standard, and
tutoring. BECAUSE THERE IS NO GRADE RECOVERY after each quarter this year, students will be expected
to take full advantage of all safety nets offered to assist them in meeting the standards and objectives
being taught.
Parents and students may also CONTACT ME by emailing questions to ladsona@duvalschools.org. To leave
a voice mail message, please call 266-1200, ext. 2110. Email contacts will be returned within a few hours
each day, but it may take up to 48 hours to return a phone call, as my schedule is not always predictable.
Emailing will always get a faster response, since I can check that from my phone wherever I am.
Home-to-School Communication
Parents/guardians should feel free to contact me using the information provided at the top of this syllabus.
I expect parents/guardians to be an active part of their childs education. Therefore, I will communicate
student progress by sending home progress reports (which students will return signed) and other
important information halfway through the marking period. If the student has below a C, then I will also
give him a scholarship warning. In addition, parents/guardians should talk to their students about class
daily to ensure students are staying on top of their assignments and understanding the material. Together
we can be more effective in ensuring our students are successful.
