Course Objectives
For pupils on the course following the Edexel (BTEC) Level 2 First Certificate in Engineering. This course is over two years.
To obtain the certificate students will need to complete 180 hours over the two years - students will complete 4 units to reach this goal, two mandatory
and two optional units. A brief description of the units:
Completed in 60 hours
UNIT 1 - Working Safely and Effectively in Engineering - 30 hours
The purpose of the unit is to raise learners awareness of how to work safely in an engineering environment - this includes work on individual machines and working with others in the workplace which involves identifying and understanding the rules and work laws involved in assessing risk and
careful planning.
UNIT 2 - Interpreting and Using Engineering Information - 30 hours
An important part of the engineer's work is to use and interpret information. The purpose of this unit is to provide experiences for students working
with engineering drawings, specifications, tables and charts of information and production plans that will assist the engineering process.
Optional units - two units completed 120 hours
UNIT 14 - Selecting and Using Secondary Machining Techniques to Remove Material - 60 hours
The purpose of this unit is to raise learners awareness of how production techniques create products using machinery.
UNIT 15 - Part Programming CNC Machines - 60 hours
The purpose of this unit is to provide learners with experience of working with CNC machines and learning how to programme using specifications
and careful planning.
The model scheme of work here is based on 14 pupils on the course. The course replaces 2 traditional GCSE subjects where BTEC Level 2 is equivalent to 2 GCSE subjects - 6 lessons per week.
ASSESSMENT
Learners can achieve level two in the course with a PASS, Merit or Distinction. This is a way of differentiating between the learners, where most of the work has
been developed towards the merit grade; tutors will be able to expand on the work in order to achieve Distinction grades. Full descriptions are available on the
Excel sheet "Knowledge of Assessment Units".
The assessment is carried out through paper assignments, practical tasks in the workshop and project work providing an opportunity to achieve at all levels.
Quizzes are available on MOODLE and the pupils will be assessed on their understanding of these. Learners may self assess by using and checking their practical
work sheets.
Key Skills / Life
There are opportunities for key skills which are clearly indicated in the specification of units. The scheme of work is referred to where appropriate.
Personal and Social Education
PSE requirements are referred to at the beginning of each unit of work. The course offers opportunities to meet the requirements of the PSE framework.
The Welsh Dimension
During 2009 a number of external agencies have forged links with the school. This has provided opportunities for the learners to visit local companies and raise
awareness of the engineering world. During the lessons examples of products will be used to enhance learners understanding of the subject.
Use of MOODLE
The use of MOODLE is essential to running the course. All assessment sheets and additional information such as notes and links are available on MOODLE.
Learners can also upload their work onto MOODLE to be assessed and see and provide opinions on their work. Some assessment is also achieved through the use
of quizzes.
Because pupils can open the MOODLE at home there are opportunities for parents to look at, and to get a better idea of what is being achieved on the course and
become more involved in their children.
RESOURCES & Class Management
The scheme of work is designed for a class of 14 pupils, with the following resources in the workshop: 4 lathes, 2 milling machines, 2 drilling machines, metalworking hand tools for cutting, shaping, marking, and measuring. Vernier calipers and micrometers are also in order to emphasise the importance of producing
detailed work. From the practical side of classroom management it enables half of the group to work on the bench and other on the machines. The assignments
within MOODLE are therefore essential for class management.
The Work
The main aim of the course will be to provide experiences for learners about engineering through practical tasks. The tasks include work "on paper" related to practical tasks in order to meet the specifications of the units. Elements of various units can be brought together in the classroom. During the practical lessons some learners work with machines, others will work on their assignments and CAD tasks. For the CAD work, designs are given by the
teacher so they practice and use correct conventions and also ensure the design software is used correctly.
During the year 10, learners work on 5 units of practical work, namely:
Drilling gauge, Screwdriver, Scriber, Centre punch, Marking Gauge and Stand.
The purpose of the Screwdriver task is getting the students to use a workshop and working as an engineer creating from a design, reading and interpreting worksheets, risk assessment sheets etc.
As they work through tasks there will be less information from the teacher and learners will have to create and implement their own risk assessment
sheets. By the time they reach the Stand practical work they will have experienced a number of engineering tasks and able to produce something themselves.
The Stand task will be treated as a design and engineering exercise or end of year project. This work will demonstrate understanding of what has been
achieved during the year. This is the kind of project that follows the lines of a design and make project, where they'll have to design and create a stand to
hold the tools they have produced. They will have completed the work here by the end of year 10 and have answered most of the specification requirement for Units 1, 2 and 14.
During year 11 learners work on the following practical work, namely:
Machine clamps, Welding tasks, CNC exercises, Bolt, Name plate and Memo stand
At the beginning of the year, some weeks will be given to using Solid works 3D software to enhance their knowledge, and use 2D CAD Design in year
10.
The Machine clamps work involves heavy milling work in steel; CNC programming is introduced and learners eventually producing their own work on
the CNC lathe and milling machines. Pupils will have the opportunity to produce components on traditional machines before proceeding to production on
CNC machines.
There is no need to undertake welding on the course, but experience in spot welding, MIG and arc is valuable to them and an interesting conclusion to the
course.

Demonstrate the machines and tools to the learners who will then use the
lathe, drill and miller. They will learn a great deal from this when completing
unit 14 and also by using test pieces for practice.
Learners work on the marking gauge project and produce the leg, marking face
and bolt.
During the lessons there will be an opportunity for the teacher to demonstrate
important elements of the worksuch as drilling on the lathe, facing, turning
down, using the centre and tailstock, using the drilling machine, hand tools,
measuring and marking out tools. There will also be a demonstration piece cut
out using the miller in order to demonstrate the process. Using PPE and urging
learners to work safely and remember what they have learnt regarding health
and safety during the first weeks of the course.
These weeks are essential in getting the learners to work on a range of tasks
when some are turning others will be drilling and others completing bench
work. Some will completing computer work within Moodle (uploading assignments, revising and completing quizzes).
Learners will have theory lessons on the different processes such as heat treatment and thread cutting. They will produce information sheets on the relevant
processes when not in the workshop or designing.
Practical assessment is undertaken during this periodwhich includes completion of self assessment sheets.

END OF YEAR PROJECTThis is the work that will demonstrate understanding of what has been learnt during the year. This will follow the format of
a design and make task.
Learners work on the project Tool Standtheir task is to design and make a
stand to hold the marking gauge, scriber and centre punch.
During the lessons the learners will think of ideas and work in groups to develop and share ideas.
They will produce a set of original engineering drawings of their stand using
2D Design.
Produce plans towards making the stand and work out details of making
(materials, tools required, speeds) - working in groups.
Use their knowledge to produce a stand in the workshopby following their
designs and plans.
These weeks are essential in getting the learners to work on a range of tasks
when some are turning others will be drilling and others completing bench
work. Some will completing computer work within Moodle (uploading assignments, revising and completing quizzes).
Learners will receive theory lessons on new processes if necessary
Practical assessment is undertaken during this periodwhich includes completion of self assessment sheets.
