Word Bluff
In this engaging teaching activity, students play a game where they guess which definition is
correct, but first they have to invent false definitions for words using defining relative clauses.
Before class, make one copy of the worksheets for every two students.
Procedure
Divide the class into an even number of teams of two or three students.
Give half the teams a copy of the Team A worksheet and half the teams a copy of the Team
B worksheet.
Tell the students that they are going to play a game where they guess which definition is
correct, but first they have to invent two false definitions for each word on their worksheet.
Explain that on their worksheet is the correct definition for each word. Tell them to work with
the people in their team to come up with two false definitions for each word. The sentences
cover defining relative clauses for people, places and things.
Go round the class offering help with writing definitions, as this may be quite difficult for the
students.
When the teams have finished writing false definitions, ask each Team A to sit facing a
Team B for the next part of the activity.
Teams take it in turns to read out one of their words and the three possible definitions from
the worksheet without saying which definition is correct.
The opposing team must discuss and guess the correct definition.
Teams score one point for each correct answer.
The team with the highest score at the end is the winner.
