increase production quality control.

Barretos Manufacturing, Inc.

2005-2010
La Grande, OR
Welder/Metal Fabricator: Developed R&D prototypes. Interpreted engineering drawings. Consulted with
clients throughout the manufacturing process. Proficient in MIG and structural welding (flux core arc
welding). Experienced with arc and oxyacetylene welder, horizontal band saw, press brake, cutting torch,
plasma cutter, shear and hydraulic ironworker. WABO certified: FCAW 3G 6G.
PROJECTS (in order of difficulty):
Novel dual-upper limb exoskeleton combined with EMG and EEG sensors for data acquisition of
post-stroke patients: Concentrated on creating a two-degree of freedom device to mimic the motion of
the scapulohumeral rhythm of the shoulder complex. Verifying and validating torque requirements using
Harmonic Drive motors (torque spec., voltage, current draw, etc.). Sizing of motors to each joints torque
requirements to efficiently actuate the exoskeleton (operating at 50% duty cycle, ensuring peak torque
of motor is adequate for expected shock loading). Management and supervision of 6-member
undergrad research team assigned to the project.

Arm Assist for TECNALIA Ventures: Improved upon existing design of a post-stroke rehabilitation
device for the wrist/hand for Spain-based company TECNALIA Ventures. Improved existing design for
manufacturability and increased structural integrity. Design of an off-center bolt, which functioned as a
Cam to offer infinitely-variable resistance within a pre-determined range. Fabricated the prototype
(aluminum 6061-T6). Operation of prototype was verified and tested by St. Lukes Rehabilitation
Institute in Spokane WA to glowing reviews. TECNALIA Ventures immediately ordered a second unit for
testing and showpiece purposes.

Wearable device for monitoring ROM (range of motion) stats for shoulder and elbow:
Designed and prototyped a low-cost, accurate, wearable upper-limb garment with wireless data
transmission for measuring ROM in rehabilitation patients. Received Award for Excellence at
st
2016 UIdaho Engineering Design Expo. 1 authorship of related conference paper. Led and
mentored assigned undergraduate group members.
Band-Beesten (Senior Capstone Project): Phase 2 design/fabrication of fully powered, wirelesslycontrolled robotic drum set (max. load capacity 1000 lbs) with omni wheels for the UIdaho Marching
Band. Design and fabrication of a modular tetrahedral 6061-T6-aluminum frame, and 12 diameter omni
wheels that can traverse nearly any terrain. Team Leader of Capstone Project Phase 2 and Lead
Mentor of project Phase 3.

EMBC 2016 Conference Paper: Design of a spring-assisted exoskeleton module for wrist and hand
nd
rehabilitation. 2 authorship.

High Temperature Soil Probe: Improved existing design and fabricated 10 high-temperature soil
probes for data acquisition of forest fire behavior for the U.S. Forest Service. Selected new types of
thermocouple tubing; designed and implemented processes for installing thermocouples. Designed and
manufactured jig for press-fitting thermocouple tubing and thermocouple mounting bar. Applied lean
manufacturing concepts and created full drawing package for future production.

Nitinol Wire Rehab Project: Thermodynamic analysis and experimental testing of nitinol (NickelTitanium) wire for a wearable hand rehabilitation device.
