SARFARAZ AHMED KHAN EDUCATIONAL TRUST

SAKET
(THE MISSION FOR NEW LIFE)

A PUBLIC CHARITABLE TRUST

ABOUT THE TRUST

Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan Educational Trust (SAKET) is a public charitable

trust, established by a Registered Deed of Trust, registered before the Registrar
of Assurance, Kolkata, in the year 2007.

It is a public charitable trust in nature and performs its activities with the
aim and objective of empowering the youth of the underprivileged and deprived
section of the society through education. It looks forward towards the upliftment
of the destitutes. Its mission is to see that the youth are not deprived of their
Basic Rights to proper standard of education because of any socio-economic
reasons or likewise.

SAKET came to existence with the objective to form a Public Charitable

Trust for the purpose of establishing Educational Institutions so as to impart,
disseminate and promote education and learning in all of its branches and to
organize, establish, deliver, perform all work which will facilitate the socio
economic empowerment of the underdeveloped and underprivileged people of
the country.

SAKET has already established an academy, GLOBAL ACADEMY FOR

CAREER DEVELOPMENT (GACD), for providing training to students for their career
development. Specialized training from experts of respective fields are provided
to students to shape their career.

People at SAKET believe that to maintain an amicable atmosphere in a

multicultural environment, all must work, study and live together for the healthy
upliftment of the community which also gives a wider horizon to the community
members. Keeping this in mind, SAKET is open for one and all.

SAKET’s foundation is laid in the suburbs of Topsia, one of the most

backward areas of Kolkata. Topsia has got a total population of approximately 2
lacs with only 2 schools to accommodate the children of all. As a result majority
of the children do not even see the doors of the school. Thus, Topsia is sinking
more and more into darkness. Members of SAKET believe that it is very easy to
curse the darkness, very difficult to light a lamp. A large number of people
residing in Topsia fall below the poverty line and this contribute to one of the
major reasons why they can not afford to send their children to schools. The poor
people send their wards out of their hard earned money to the road-side so
called English medium schools. Students are even deprived of the minimum
standard of education there and thus, being exploited in the name of English
medium school. This results in the double victimization of the poor people of
Topsia. This lamp, in the name of SAKET, is lit with a resolute devotion,
determination, conviction and a valiant foot forward. SAKET saw the light of the
day on the 3rd day of November, 2007.

GENESIS OF TRUST

Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, the settler of the trust, spent his childhood on the
dismal lanes of Topsia where he encountered the pathetic conditions of the
muslims and even worked as a hawker on the streets of Esplanade. Through
dogged determination and perseverance, he attained academic scholarship of
distinction and firmly believes hat proper education is the only tool for social
empowerment of any community. He, therefore, seeks to upgrade educational
level of the under privileged through SAKET.

MISSION STATEMENT

Every citizen has the Basic Rights to proper standard of education and
SAKET’s endeavor will be to see that they do not be deprived of it because of any
socio economic reasons or likewise.

ACTIVITIES OF THE TRUST

SAKET, established for the noble cause, is actively involved in many

such activities which serve the best interest of the underprivileged and deprived
section of the society. The activities of SAKET are as follows:

A) GLOBAL ACADEMY FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT (GACD)

GACD is a unit of SAKET and itprovides training for various competitive exams
and prepares the students to crack the exams in a more pragmatic fashion.
GACD ensures the students a high standard of education with an erudite aroma
and expert faculties of respective fields to guide them through. Students at
GACD are moulded to take up the challenges of the competitive world outside,
made self-dependent and confidence is instilled in them.

Courses at GACD are the future shaping endeavours for the youth which provide
an excellent portal to articulate the students' dreams, aspirations and
achievements. The dire need for students, more particularly to those belonging to
the backward and middle class families, to get adequate access and proper
standard of education to keep in pace with the contemporary era is the primary
cause of concern towards the embarkment of the courses at GACD.

Among many, a few of the ongoing programs conducted by GACD are mentioned
below:

CRASH COURSE FOR WEST BENGAL LEGAL SERVICES EXAMINATION

GACD has just finished training with its first batch of students who appeared for
the WB Legal Services Examination, 2008. Four months of intensive training was
provided to the students at GACD to prepare them for the examination.
ONE YEAR COURSE FOR WEST BENGAL JUDICIAL SERVICES EXAMINATION

GACD offers a one year course to the students opting to appear for the West
Bengal Judicial Service Examination. Special attention is provided to students as
some of them are practicing lawyers so they can not devote requisite time
required for the preparation of the examination.

CRASH COURSE FOR JOINT ENTRANCE EXAMINATION (JEXPO)

GACD offers a crash course for the aspiring engineers to enable them to crack the
Joint Entrance Examination (JEXPO).

CRASH COURSE FOR JOINT ENTRANCE EXAMINATION, (LAW, CALCUTTA

UNIVERSITY)

GACD will shortly commence the crash course for the JEE of Law under the
University of Calcutta for the students having an aptitude in the legal profession.
Students can join after their Higher Secondary Examinations.

COURSES TO BE OFFERED SHORTLY AT GACD

The following courses among others will be offered soon by GACD:

1. One year training programme for JEE (Engineering & Medical)

2. Two years comprehensive course H.S. and JEE.

3. Communicative English Course.

4. Advance Language Courses.

5. Course for QLTT Examinations.

6. Computer Courses.

7. Other Competitive Examinations like UPSC, WBCS, SSC, PSC, Banking,

Railways etc.

B) CAREER COUNSELING AT SCHOOLS

Today’s youth is standing at a crossroad. After passing out class X, they
enter into a world of decision-making. The very first decision they have to take is
about the future course of study. Unfortunately, very few students are
independent enough to decide their future course of study. It is very heartening
to know that the future of the present generation is guided by the past
generation. Their parents totally ignore the fact that they should also consider
their wards’ interest. Some may possess entrepreneurship skills; others may
aspire to do something great in literature. But all these aims fall into dust, when
these students are forced to yield their parents’ desires. There are even worse
situations where students and parents, both do not have sufficient knowledge
about the possible career options available to the students and the process to
get admitted to those courses.

Career counseling programs are conducted under the banner of SAKET at

different schools, enabling the students to have clear focus on their goal in life
and make the right career choices. Until they focus, they can not achieve their
goal. Career counseling programs conducted by GACD, give the wandering
thoughts and desires of the students a definite direction and thus, guide them to
their goals in life. GACD believes that excellence is not a skill, it is an attitude
and one's attitude determines his altitude. Counseling programs are organised at
different schools with special focus to vernacular languages institutions. We
organized counseling camp at Milan Mela, 2007-2008 where our volunteers
provided counseling and guidance to thousands of students. We further have
organized career counseling programs in different school of Kolkata, including
Momin Memorial High School, Madarsa Aliya etc,

C) HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY (HRA)

It is one of the wings of SAKET which pierces through the tyranny on human
race and ensures full protection of the Basic Human Rights.

The Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan Educational Trust (SAKET) is not only the
pioneer in student career counseling and in preparing students for professional
competitive exams but, within a few months of its inauguration, it has entered
into an informal partnership with CRY (Child Rights and You) to conduct a
research based on Human Right Violations in respect of Right to Education in
Topsia.

Topsia happens to be one of the worst hit under-developed areas in

Kolkata, spreading at approximately 2 sq. kms area with a high number of
illiterates multiplying in number. The locality lacks basic amenities including
education which is a Fundamental Right guaranteed under 21A of the Indian
Constitution. In such a scene it was SAKET to take up the job of conducting this
research.

This research is focused basically on reaching out to the little deprived

and malnourished children in the area, its objective was to identify the reasons
for little children either not attending or being dropped out from schools and the
root causes for the growing illiteracy in the area. The first phase of research
completed the survey of all the schools and submission of RTI applications before
the concerned authorities.

It will plan our future course of action only once its research completes
and the violation of right to education in the locality is established.

SAKET PUBLIC SCHOOL (SPS)

The daunting task SAKET has under taken is to establish a Saket Public
School for the deprived and under-privileged section of the society. Students
deprived of their Basic Rights to Education will be restored back their rights at
SAKET whether be it through SPS, HRA or other similar projects. School lays the
foundation of a student’s career and SPS will endeavour to concrete such
foundations of students so that they stand tall and tough against the test of time.

But if we look at today’s younger generation, with their frustrations,

restlessness and ‘who cares’ attitude, notice the ever growing crime rate, one
things stand out – their lack of basic values. Simple things, like love for the
motherland, respect for the elderly, politeness and gratitude, truthfulness and
honesty, etc., which were very important day before yesterday, were common
enough till yesterday, have suddenly vanished today. Bereft of the values, the
younger people really do not know where they are heading.
Getting hundred percent marks in an exam should not be as important as
doing the work honestly. Similarly, being good in studies and games is important
but still more important is being polite, humble and helpful. Quite often, we find
children are not aware of their responsibilities or are not willing to shoulder them.
Children should be told not only about their rights but also should be made aware
of their duties towards the family, school and society as both rights and duties go
hand in hand. These small things, which tend to miss our eyes in the early years or
we may think the child to be too small to be burdened with such things. By the
time we sit up, it’s too late. So, the earlier we start, the better it is. Conditions will
be reverted at SPS as it will toil to instill the right values in a child from the
beginning.

SPS will have a paid school where reasonable and affordable fees will be
charged from the students. Many parents send their child to work during daytime
and believe that sending their children to school will not profit them. They even
refuse to bear the cost of their education. From the inception of SAKET we plan to
run a school which is on one hand a paid school, where reasonable and affordable
fees will be charged and on the other hand absolutely free education in evening
time will be provided to the child labours, slum

area children and other children from poor families. We will endeavour to maintain
the same standard of education in both the sessions of SPS.

Fee schooling along with all the requisite study materials will be made
available for the students. In this way SPS will arm the nation with education.
Education has never reached such deprived children but SPS will extend the rays
and fragrance of education to such children and thus, contribute in building the
future of India.

Apne Aap Women Worldwide (A2W2), an international organisation assured

to lend forward all hands of cooperation to SAKET for this noble and virtuous cause
of establishing the Saket Public School (SPS).

SPS is under construction and looks forward towards other such helping
hands in the form of donation, monetary or intellectual, or otherwise. After all we
have a responsibility towards our society – not only today’s society, but also
tomorrow’s.
FUTURE PLANS

• SAKET is looking forward to establish other educational institutions i.e.,

medical, engineering and other educational institutions. These projects of
SAKET are under sincere consideration.

• SAKET is planning to organize a National Level Conference on the scope and

challenges for the establishment of minority educational institutions in
India. This conference will have all the intellectuals of India involved in a
discussion under one roof to overcome the dearth of minority educational
institutions in India.

• SAKET intends to organize an educational event (Quiz, Debate, Essay

Competition, Moot Court etc.) to keep the students actively involved in
studies and at the same time not to lose their interests due to the same
routined lifestyle.
