PREPARE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

TERMINOLOGIES
AMPERE- is unit of measure of electric current.
CIRCUIT- is the path of electric current from the source to the components and goes
back to the source.
KILOWATT- is a unit of power equivalent to 1000 watts.
CONDUCTOR- a wire or a cord which provides path for current flow.
RESISTANCE- something that resist the flow of current.
HOT WIRE- A wire through which current flows. It is commonly called live wire.
CORRUGATED PLASTIC CONDUIT- commonly known as flexible non-metallic conduit
or moldflex.
METALLIC CONDUITS- metal raceways classified into four.: rigid steel conduit (RSC),
Intermediate
.
metallic conduit or tubing ( IMC Or IMT), Electrical
metallic conduit or tubing (EMT or EMC), and flexible metallic conduit (FMC).
NON-METALLIC CONDUITS- plastic conduits or raceways designed to be a channel of
wire that are classified as rigid non-metallic conduit or PVC, flexible non metallic or
CFC, and surface plastic molding.
CONNECTORS AND ADAPTERS- accessories that are used to connect boxes to
conduits or raceways to the other boxes in the electrical system.
ALLEN SCREWDRIVER/ WRENCH- this could be in the shape of screw driver or a
wrench. Its function is to drive screws with hexagonal slot heads.
SWITCH- a device that connects and disconnects the flow of electric current in a
circuit.
FUSE- a circuit protective device that automatically blows and cuts the current
when overload or short circuits happened.
KILO- A prefix that means one thousand ( 1000).
VOLTAGE- electric potential or potential difference express in volts.
- The difference in electrical charge between two points in a circuit
expressed in volts.
CONDUCTORS- an electrical materials that allows the electrons to pass through the
circuit.
A material that has many free electrons.
INSULATOR- material used to cover electric wires which may be made from pastic,
rubber, asbestos.
- A material that has very few or no free electrons.
- A material that conducts electricity.
FREE ELECTRONS- a loosely packed electrons present in a material which makes it a
conductor.
ELECTRIC CIRCUIT- An arrangement of electrical materials that provides a path for
electrical current to flow.
ELECTRIC WIRING- a circuit of wires for the distribution of electricity.
OPEN CIRCUIT- an incomplete electrical circuit in which no current flows.
SHORT CIRCUIT- accidental contact between two points in an electric circuit that
have a potential difference. It is also called as a circuit with very small or zero
resistance.
LOAD- an element of the circuit that transform electrical energy to other form of
energy. ( bulb/lamp, resistor, appliances).

SOURCE- the supplier of energy of the circuit. ( battery, generator, solar cell, etc)
OCTOPUS WIRING- a single extension wire that has many other extension cords for
appliances connected on it. It may cause fire due to overloading.
ELECTRIC CURRENT- the flow of electrons or the movement of electrically charged
particles, atoms, or ions through solids, liquids, gases, or free space. It can also be
defined as a flow of electricity through a conductor.
