PREGUNTA 1

Read the following text and do the activities that follow.

Dear Julie,
I hope youre doing fine. Im writing this e-mail to you to say hello and, also, to tell you I decided to take
your advice: I will travel a bit around Europe. I know nobody expected me to make a decision like this,
but I think I really need to be away for a while. I already searched for information about the weather in
some European countries, and I found that the best season of the year, for me, is summer; you know I
love sunny days and it is always rainy here.
I consider a 6-month experience is enough, and if everything goes as I have planned, I think I could visit
several cities. Also, I feel I should go to natural reserves, climb mountains, go trekking, swim in lakes or
rivers, and do other similar activities because I am very passionate about animals and nature itself.
Another important reason for me to travel in summer is that I dont have many winter clothes. I have a
couple of coats that work in Bogot but theyre not appropriate for colder places. Obviously, I may buy
some more clothes but I dont want to carry lots of things wherever I go, I want to travel comfortably.
Can you recommend me a safe place to exchange money? I saved some money last year and, now, Im
ready to exchange it for euros, but I dont want to take the risk of going to a place that is not reliable. Im
asking you for this favor because you know this city more than I do.
My mother is a bit worried about my trip. She went to Paris last year and saw that, in general, life in
Europe is more expensive than in Colombia. Also, because she hates when I go away and leave her alone
for so long. Anyways, this is the happiest time of my life and I hope to enjoy the most of it. I wanted to
share my joy with you because you are a true friend to me.
Well, this is all I can tell by now. I hope you can write to me soon.
Sincerely,
Your friend Juana

Hi mom,
I'm finally in Colombias capital city: Bogota, and I am so excited to be here, mom. Most people here are
definitely kind and warm- hearted, and theres a lot of energy everywhere. Here, people listen to music
almost all the time so Im thinking they might be happier than people in New York. You should know
Bogota is a very special city and that it has a very strange weather that changes a lot during the day.
Sometimes it might be really hot and the next minute it can start raining. Its crazy because it can be
sunny and rainy at the same time. So, usually in the evening, you have to wear a sweater or
warmer clothes because its really cold, or sometimes it might be rainy too so you have to carry
an umbrella with you all the time.
Well, I have to tell you that Bogota has a lot of places to visit. There are many interesting
museums and awesome shopping malls. My friend Linda told me I should stay at this hostel
downtown, so here I am at La Candelaria neighborhood. Its really nice because believe it or
not, there are people from all over the world. Whenever I go out to the streets, I can see people
from Germany, England, Argentina, France, Chile and Brazil. That has been a big surprise for
me, I think its amazing. I can say its very similar to New York in that way, the difference is
probably a big amount of foreigners in New York are there usually doing businesses, while in
Colombia most foreigners are travelling as tourists.
This city is also a lot cheaper than New York. A night at the hostel is just $30.000 Colombian
pesos, which is around U$15. Can you believe it? Its fantastic because you can do a lot more
things spending less money. In New York, everything is so expensive, I guess thats the price of
living at the big apple. Here, I can tell you food is delicious because there are lots and lots
of tasty fruits to choose from. There is also a great variety of vegetables, you cant even
imagine. So, a delicious healthy salad of lettuce, beans, mushrooms, cheese, and corn with
some, lets say, mango or strawberry juice for lunch is just $15.000, which is around U$8. And
the best thing is that everything here is %100 natural, a lot cheaper than New York and
healthier too.
Mom, there are many things I have to tell you about my experience in this awesome country. I cant do it
right now because we are going out to visit some museums with some friends. Please let me know about
you and dad. I miss you all.
Big hug,

Daryl
