Class Information:
Text:
Miller and Levine Biology
Science Lab Fee: $10.00, cash or check made payable to Gulf Breeze High School
Supplies: Spiral notebook, Folder, pens & pencils, color pencils, highlighters
Course Description:
Biology I Honors explores the characteristics of life cycles of organisms and explains
their relationships with each other and their environment. While the content focus of this
course is consistent with the Biology I course, students will explore these concepts in
greater depth. In general, the academic pace and rigor will be greatly increased for honors
level course work. Laboratory investigations that include the use of scientific inquiry,
research, measurement, problem solving, laboratory apparatus and technologies,
experimental procedures, and safety procedures are an integral part of this course. This
course is designed to teach the relationship of humans to other living things, as well as the
basic chemistry, physics, and physiology associated with living things. This course will
encourage students to use hands-on lab investigations to explore biological concepts and
apply their findings to everyday experiences.
Classroom Expectations
1. Respect.
2. Integrity.
3. Kindness.
4. NO CELLULAR DEVISES,
unless specifically assigned.
5. Clean up after yourself.

Consequences for not following expectations:

1. Verbal warning.
2. Last one out the door, Student teacher
conference.
3. Contact home.
4. Referral

Cell phone policy:

I have a ZERO Tolerance policy for cell phones in my classroom. Students must have them
stored away in their backpacks upon entering the room. Any unauthorized used a cell
phone in my class will result in a referral to the front office. Students will be told exactly
when they are permitted to have them out for educational activities, no other use is
acceptable.
Laboratory:
While in the lab, you will conduct yourself in a safe and responsible manner according to
the guidelines given to you at the beginning of the semester. Failure to do so will result in
dismissal from the lab and a grade of 0 for the lab.
Assignments:
All homework assignments will be due at the beginning of the period and are to be placed
in the appropriate location upon entering the classroom. All class work will be due when
called for or at the end of the period. If you are absent, your homework or a missed test is
due upon your return. Any classwork, homework or test assigned/missed when you were
absent is due within three days of your return. Late work will only be accepted the following
day for a maximum of 70%. Be responsible and get your work in on time.

Make up work is entirely the students responsibility. They are to check assignment folder
on the day that you return to class.
Extra Help:
I am always willing to provide extra help before school from 8:40-9:15. However, you will
want to make an appointment with me, as I have other morning meetings/duties.
Homework:
Honors Biology is a rigorous course and for this reason students will be expected to work on
biology every night. Students will not always have written work to turn in, but they should
review notes and/or read ahead for 15-20 minutes daily.
Course Outline:
1st semester
Introduction to Biology
Biochemistry
Ecology
CELLS
Genetics

2nd semester
Genetics Continued
Evolution
Classification
Plants
Human Biology

Attendance:
Regular attendance is a key component of performing well in this course. You will be
expected to turn in all missed assignments within 3 class days. After 3 days a
grade of 0 will be recorded for the assignment. This includes any missed labs.
Assignments that were due during your absence should be turned in the day you
return. All makeup labs must be done before school. It is your responsibility to set up a
time with me to make up missed labs. If you are absent the day before a test you will be
expected to take the test with the rest of the class. If you are absent on the day of a test,
you will take the test on the day of your return (either in the morning or during your
class period). Retakes are not allowed.
Code 2 or Pre-arranged Absences: It is expected with this type of absence that you
obtain your assignments in advance and turn them in the first day you return to school.
You will also be required to make up any missed tests or class assignments the first day
you return. I will be using Edmodo.com to help you keep up with the class material during
your absence. It is your responsibility to obtain assignments prior to the absence.
Unexcused Absences: Any student with an unexcused absence in a class will NOT be
allowed to make up school work missed during the unexcused period and shall be given 0s
for missed work.
Please make every effort to be at school on lab days because labs are very hard to make
up. In some cases, an alternate assignment may be given in place of a lab that you
missed. If for any reason you find yourself needing additional help please let me
know.

Dear Parents/Guardians:
Thank you for taking the time to review your students Biology syllabus for the year. I look
forward to helping your student succeed and enjoy learning this year. Please sign and
return this sheet with the $10.00 lab fee as soon as possible, due Friday, August 19, 2016.
Your student will also be receiving lab safety guidelines, which you may want to review with
him/her. Feel free to contact me anytime with questions/concerns and remember you can
always check your students progress on the grade line.
Please encourage your student to abide by the schools cell phone policy. In class is it to be
stored in a bag unless specifically required for the days work. They ARE now allowed to use
it in the hallways, with the exception of photos, video and audio recordings.
This class has an End of Course (EOC) exam in May which the student must pass to get
credit for the course and graduate. PLEASE encourage them to keep up with all work, read
and study, as this is an important test in their high school career. It also accounts for
30% of their Biology grade for the year.
I always love any parent involvement. I am looking for guest speakers if you or anyone you
know works in any biological fields. I will always accept any extra classroom supplies like
tissues, paper towels, color pencils, markers, or candy, popcorn etc., we love snacking!
Contact me anytime at NeumannH@santarosa.k12.fl.us. Im looking forward to a great and
engaging year!
Sincerely,
Heather Neumann
