If you rest, you rust....

If you rest, you will rust, is a common but a famous saying by

Helen Hayes, urges people to rise from their sleep and to work
hard to accomplish life. It tells us the value of persistence and
how it is the only way to success. Each and every person is
born on this earth with a reason, and god has given them the
mentality, potentials or in simple word talent, to fulfil the
meaning of life. But there are people literally waste their
capacity, just by being inactive in life. It is necessary to
convince them to come back into the state of being proactive in
life, rather than living in the darkness of indolence.
Let us consider an iron rod which is not used for a long time.
Oxidation takes place and the iron rod will start to rust. After a
few months the iron rod takes up a state where it loses its
strength and cannot be used at all. Apparently, the similar thing
happens with human beings. When humans are born they are
filled with energy and the potential to fulfil their objectives. But
when they become lethargic, they are slowly moving into the
state of becoming idle and inactive. Initially, they also lose their
mentality to work for life and spoil their life.
The people who are imperceptibly moving into the state of
slothfulness are more prone to diseases such as obesity,
cardiac arrest, depression etc. Obesity is defined as an
epidemic which is prevalent in idle people. Nowadays, idle
people are technically considered as lifeless. Taking inspiration
from our grand-parents or their parents, basically our
ancestors, who used to work day and night at our age, and are
still active and have the energy to undertake any work. But
scrutinizing the current scenario, we are merely able to walk for
2 kms while they used to walk for 10! They were free from
diseases, but we are rather prone to diseases which maybe no
one has ever heard!
Sometimes failures lead a person gradually into shiftlessness.
Some people excogitate their failures to be deterrents of life;
rather failures are one of the stepping stones to success. It is

failures which teach us to battle hard and win them. There are
many glorious stories where people are persisted to achieve
success in life and establish their name in the world, despite
the failures which acted as obstacles in their way.
One such glorious example to be acknowledged is of Steve
Jobs. He relentlessly worked towards his quest in building a
computer for common man. He came from a middle class
family and was encouraged by his father to venture the outside
world. He started a company and gradually made it to
conglomerate. In his earlier years of starting a company, he
faced a lot major setbacks but never stopped or closed his
company. In the midway of his journey, he was thrown out of
his own company. He later reinstated himself back in that
company and took the company to a great height. But if Steve
Jobs went into rest after his eviction, he wouldnt have ever
made it back on the track. Instead he brought a revolution in
the field of technology when he returned. Even though he is not
with us today, but no one will forget the efforts he took to bring
his company to such heights. Thus, he was the one who took
Apple to where it stands today.
Sometimes in life, when you jump in an effort to reach the
clouds, you may encounter setbacks, which initially leads you
to have a feeling as if the world is ending. First of all keep calm
and take a deep breath. Instead of panicking we must
contemplate this epic fail and keep innovating, implementing,
learning the causes of the failure and at the same time keep
motivating and believing in you.
Throwing light on the other part of todays scenario, Helen
Hayes claim holds some truth in some degrees, but not in every
situation. It does not reflect the reality. In todays world, each
and every person is vying with each other, striving to carve
their name in the hall of fame. They have literally obliterated
the word rest from their brains. In fact, drawing attention to
the world of today, we can infer that rest is equally essential as
work. Although rest is interrelated to idleness, laziness or

indolence, with recent research, rest is crucially important for

the growth and development of a person.
Recent research has stated that there is a correlation between
rest and work. A company with more than five hundred workers
was divided into two groups in which one group had adequate
rest, while the other was really hard working but lack rest.
Researchers closely observed the activities done by workers. It
was found that the group which had adequate rest, worked not
only efficiently but also created a harmonious work
environment as compare to the workers who lack rest.
Rest not only provides us with physical endurance but also
helps us to improve the functioning of the brain to maximum
potential. From one of my experience, I strongly believe that
rest is pivotal for life. When I changed my school, the new
school was two books ahead in French. I couldnt understand a
word they taught. So it was up to me to complete those books
in one week when I had a unit test coming by. I was
overwhelmed with the new grammar topics I had to learn.
While the test day was drawing nearer, I studied without
wasting a moment, as time was really crucial. I studied while
going to school, eating breakfast, lunch or dinner etc. Just the
day before the test, i was really frustrated and dull so my
mother advised me to take some rest. Honestly that rest really
helped me. It gave me immerse confidence and energy to write
the test. It actually pacified me. And the best part was that I
scored 29.5 out of 30. I would acknowledge the diligence and
assiduity taken but most importantly rest.
The claim if you rest, you rust may be true in some degrees,
but non -stop work will hinder one to rust. But at the same
time, resting all the time will lead a person to the dark world of
indolence. So I would like to conclude that rest wont make you
rust but inadequate rest will counteract you into rust.
