Meaning of Ism
Ism can be defined as a distinctive practice, system, or philosophy. It usually defines a
political ideology or an artistic movement. It is the unfair treatment of a group of people
who have a particular quality.

A Brief about Fauvism

Fauvism is the style of les Fauves (French for "the wild beasts"), a loose group of early
twentieth-century Modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong
colour over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism. Fauvism
became a style in 1900 and beyond 1910 but it was only popular for only three years from
1905 to 1907 in which the movement had three exhibitions.

Key Ideas of Fauvism

One of Fauvism's major contributions to modern art was its radical goal of separating
colour from its descriptive, representational purpose and allowing it to exist on the
canvas as an independent element. Colour could project a mood and establish a
structure within the work of art without having to be true to the natural world.
Another of Fauvism's central artistic concerns was the overall balance of the
composition. The Fauves' simplified forms and saturated colours drew attention to the
inherent flatness of the canvas or paper; within that pictorial space, each element
played a specific role. The immediate visual impression of the work is to be strong
and unified.
Above all, Fauvism valued individual expression. The artist's direct experience of his
subjects, his emotional response to nature, and his intuition were all more important
than academic theory or elevated subject matter. All elements of painting were
employed in service of this goal.

Comparative Analysis of Fauvism and Hymn for the Weekend

The art movement Fauvism and the video Hymn for the Weekend shares a mutual
association. The correlation achieved from the video and the art movement are:
Like in Fauvism the video also exhibits dazzling and extravagant colours for
description and representational purpose. The colours have been highlighted by
creating a contrast with the background in such a way that it grasps the attention of
the viewer thus revealing some meaning as mentioned in the key ideas of Fauvism.
In this video the colours are used as a medium to represent the diversity in India may
it be the culture, the festivals, the humanity, the houses, the dresses etc. The colour
has been used to emphasize on certain division of the Indian culture and traditions
which is very exclusive and could be hardly witnessed in any other nations. For
example: the saints which dresses in a bright saffron colour, the bright coloured
temple, the festival of colour Holi, the various classical dance forms depicted in the
video are the indigenous cultures and traditions of India which has been practiced and
preserved since ages.

Figure 6Screen-Shot-

The video has depicted the rich culture of our country which is very sacred and
exclusive and therefore deserves preservation as it might fade in this globalising
world. It has revealed the contrast between the adopted western culture and the highly
rich culture of our country through the use of colours and buildings. For example: the
dark coloured building of the urban area which is congested and gloomy has been
compared with the bright and traditional houses which are lively and welcoming.
Thus it emphasizes more on the application and adoption of local and traditional
principles rather than forcing oneself to adopt the foreign principles which might be
distressing and ravaging.

The overall balance among the various components has been executed meticulously
thus unfolding its motives. The simplified forms and saturated colours drew attention
in the video; within that pictorial space thereby each element playing a specific role.
The immediate visual impression of the work is strong, unified and meaningful.
The video has expressed the artists individual experience, emotional response and
institution of what he felt during the various phases of his journey which is one of the
most important key point of fauvism.

The main motive of the video was to show us and to the world about the rich cultural
heritage that India possesses. It wants us to value our traditional principles rather than
adopting some foreign principles which are exclusive and valuable enough if
comprehended in an effective way will aid us reach the apex. The hidden enthuse and
the high aspirations can then be achieved and so India will no longer be a developing
country but a developed country pertaining to the entire requirement for a healthy
living.
