Police Department’s North and South Precinct Patrol Officers and Detectives. Chief Teresa Szymanski
will make a presentation to the Committee and will answer questions and concerns from the community.

LPD Precinct Reorganization to Save City $700K

North Precinct Will House Uniform Patrol Division; South
Precinct Will Become Investigations Division
(LANSING) – Mayor Virg Bernero and Interim Police Chief Teresa Szymanski today announced a major
reorganization of the Lansing Police Department that will consolidate the uniform patrol division into the North
Precinct station and the detective bureau into the South Precinct station. The move will save the City of Lansing an
estimated $700,000 by streamlining the command structure that is currently required to manage patrol and
investigative operations out of two different locations.

As a result of the reorganization, the department will be able to eliminate two patrol lieutenants, three sergeants and
one administrative position. The positions to be eliminated will come through attrition rather than layoffs. The
consolidation will not affect the number of officers assigned to patrol, the current 12-hour work schedule, or the
officer’s team area assignments.

“In these difficult budgetary times, we owe it to city taxpayers to look for every possible cost savings, while we
continue to provide the highest level of service to keep Lansing safe,” Mayor Bernero said. “The consolidation
makes perfect sense because it eliminates duplication in the department’s command structure while it leaves
uniform patrols unchanged. We are getting more bang for the taxpayers’ buck and keeping Lansing safe at the
same time.”

Chief Szymanski said the consolidation only effects the physical location where officers report for duty and will
have no impact on response times because officers are not dispatched directly from the precinct stations. When
calls for service are received, officers respond from the location of their patrol duties across the city.

“This consolidation allows us to keep our uniform patrols at full strength, with 18 to 20 officers on the streets at any
given time,” Chief Szymanski said. “Our commitment to protecting our neighborhoods, schools and businesses is
unchanged. When you call 9-1-1, we will be there to help.”

Szymanski noted that both precincts will remain open 24/7 so that police reports can be taken and other customer
service and community functions can be maintained. The Investigations Division will be headed by Captain Ray
Hall, and the Uniform Patrol Division will be headed by Captain Mike Yankowski. The consolidation plan will
take effect June 26.
