Removed L2TP (Level 2 Tunneling Protocol) for modem support
8

2014 IBM Corporation

Version Mismatch State

In order to avoid profile / data corruption issues, the HMC will place a managed
system in Version Mismatch state:

Attempts to manage POWER5 servers will result in a connection state of Version

Mismatch and connection_error_code "Connection not allowed 0009-0008-00000000".

When two HMCs manage the same server, both HMCs must be at the same version.
If a server is connected to two different versions of the HMC, the higher version
HMC will upgrade the partition configuration (profile data of the system) to the latest
version.
After the partition configuration upgrade, lower levels of the HMC will not be able to
interpret the data correctly.

After the server is managed by the higher version of the HMC, you must first
initialize the server before you can go back to the lower version of the HMC.
You can restore a backup that is taken at the older level or re-create the partitions. If the
server is not initialized, one of the following outcomes can occur depending on the version
of the lower-level HMC:
HMC Version 7 Release 7.8.0 and later reports a connection error of Version mismatch
with reference code Save Area Version Mismatch.
HMC Version 7 Release 7.7.0 and earlier might report a server state of Incomplete or
Recovery. In addition, partition configuration corruption can also occur.

HMC Shellshock fixes were made available Oct 1

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1020272
DESCRIPTION: GNU Bash could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary
commands on the system, caused by an error when evaluating specially-crafted
environment variables passed to it by the bash functionality. An attacker could exploit
this vulnerability to write to files and execute arbitrary commands on the system.

Remote restart of a logical partition

You can restart an AIX, Linux, or IBM i logical partition remotely by using the Hardware
Management Console (HMC) command-line interface.

You can also restart a partition that supports the simplified version of the remote restart
capability.
You can run up to four concurrent remote restart operations.

20

HMC must be at Version 8.1.0, or later for the remote restart feature.
You must ensure that the HMC is at Version 8.2.0, and the firmware is at level 8.2 or later, for
the simplified version of the remote restart feature.
VIOS must be at version 2.2.3.4 with the VIOS interim fix IV63331m4a.
The source and the destination servers must be connected to the same HMC.
You can restart a logical partition on another server only when the source server is in the
Power Off, Error, or Error - Dump in progress state and the destination server is in the
Operating state.
From the HMC command line:
rrstartlpar -o restart -m source managed system -t target managed system -p lpar name
After the successful completion of the remote restart operation and the source server is back
in the Standby or Operating state, from the HMC command line, type the following command
to perform a cleanup operation on the source server:
rrstartlpar -o cleanup -m source managed system -p lpar name

2014 IBM Corporation

User Model for Simplified Remote Restart

21

Removes requirement of reserved storage device

User can enable the Simplified RR at partition create or thereafter

Toggle of the capability supported when partition is in powered off state

In lieu of an Reserved Storage Device or RSD, HMC will persist the partition state

Has restrictions similar to LPM (no dedIO, no HEA/SR-IOV, no Opticonnect, must set
restricted IO for IBM i partitions etc).

When user activates the partition, the current configuration of the partition along with
the PHYP partition state data is automatically persisted on the HMC.
Partition has to be activated at least once to make it remote re-startable

The data persisted on the HMC(s) is updated automatically as a result of any

configuration change or PHYP partition state changes
User has option to manually initiate sync up of configuration data (When
there is any configuration data collection/update failure, user can trigger
manual re-sync after fixing the errors)

Event Manager for Call Home

New

feature in V8.810 with initial release

First

step is the HMC event manager mode must be set. Set via the command line.
chhmc -c emch -s {enable | disable} [--callhome {enable | disable}]

Enables

system administrators to monitor and approve any data before being

transmitted from a HMC to IBM.
Register other HMCs (running V8.810 or later) - Event Manager will query the
registered HMCs for any events that are waiting to be called home to IBM.

User can see what data is pending to be sent and approve or hold these events. After
approval, the Event Manager notifies the registered HMC that it can proceed with the
call home.

The Event Manager is optional, shipped default is disabled. The user can still register
HMCs and see the events on the Event Manager.

Can be run from any V8R8.1.0 HMC.

Turning on event manager mode will block the HMC from automatically calling home
events as they occur
